Be prepared to drink lots of beer. It costs less than water at a restaurant or bar. Pork rules the menus. The majority of the people in the big cities speak English. If you fly Lufthansa, it's a good airline. Frankfort airport is hard to figure out, though. Munich is a great place.

X2 To bad you couldn't go this month, Octoberfest there is an absolute blast! Ohh yeah, dress warm.....and take a lot of pictures!

First time there? You'll have a blast. First, I would look up euro exchange rates here. It might be cheaper to exchange at the airport before you fly out. If you go to any super market bring your own bag because they don't have any. Of course enjoy the beer. Each area has a local brew. I was in Bavaria and the beer was amazing. If you enjoy a heffeweizen I recommend Guttman. Don't expect to tip in restaurants. They don't put ice in drinks either. What's cool about most local restaurants and guest houses is that they don't expect you to eat and take off like in America. You can sit at a table for hours. In fact, some of the best nights were when we would go to dinner before going out and we would end up spending the whole night there drinking beer and having a good time. Don't freak out if a stranger sits with you if it's crowded. It's not a big deal there.

The public transport is awesome. You can get anywhere by train and it's pretty easy to figure out. Most cities will have kind of a town center where all the shopping and dining is located. It's called the markplatz. Head there and you'll find something to do. If you've never had a "doner kebap" (a turkish gyro like sandwhich), grab one with a beer and you'll be set.

If you're in to night life and want to party, it's normally pretty safe. I would advice staying away from the Turks and the Russians. They like to gang up and fight if they decide they don't care for you. Also, the Polezei are no joke. They have a lot more authority than the cops in the us and are not afraid to use it. They have a spring loaded club thing that can lay you out. We used to call it the "repeater beater" because of the spring it would hit you like 4-5 times, haha.

I was there in 08 so things probably haven't changed too much. Where's the trade show located? I might be able to point you towards some cool stuff in the area. Either way, enjoy yourself and take a lot of pictures!

All I know is 2 German words.

Stoppemfromfloppen - thats the German word for bra
Derrweinergreazer - thats the German word for vaseline

Write this one down. I'm sure you'll use it Wo bewahren Sie Ihre Tiere, besonders die Schafe

I haven't been there since I was a kid. Great place, lots of to do. A week isn't really enough time there. Too bad you just missed Oktoberfest.

A suggestion....

Probably should check w/ German agriculture dept, B4 U leave. They may not allow you to bring any of your sheep into the country w/o proper immunizations....
Doubt the airline will allow anything so big in the cargo hold, and most certainly NOT in the cabin!
If you plan on an "in country" g/f, "travelling partner", don't forget your knee high boots...:D:p

Are you staying at the airport or closer to the exhibit hall? The Maritim hotel at the airport is pretty good, and the trains can take you to the exhibit hall.

Be sure to buy a ticket if you ride the trains. The police WILL stop you and check... they seem to have a lot of time on their hands.

Hanover is a nice blue collar town. You don't really need a car as public transportation is pretty good, but if you do get a car, its not that hard to navigate if you have a GPS with a european roads pack.
