headliner color

was wondering what color for headliner from g body parts ox gray or med gray? for 86 Grand National. thanks

What ever material you get, get a little extra so you can do the visor's at the same time.

Chuck

It's cardboard with foam sprayed on it, then the fabric is stuck to the foam. When mine was repaired, the shop took a sander to get off the dried up foam, and then put the new fabric back on. It's cheaper than replacing the entire thing, and looks factory when finished. Why throw away $$ if you don't have to?

The material itself has a foam backing on it that gets sprayed with 3M adhesive along with the board after it is cleaned off of the old dried up foam which has deteriorated. I used a wire brush to get the old foam off mine when I did my sagging headliner.

Stock factory headliner board is cardboard, you can get aftermarket headliner boards in plastic.
Hmm... I was at my by buddies house last night pilfering parts off a '86 Cutlass and it looked like the headliner backing board was plastic. Might have to go back and get that. ;)

Yeah, if it turns out to be a plastic headliner I would be taking that! much easier to work with than the cardboard headliner!

The headliner in my car has a styrofoam backing, it's not cardboard. I just hosed it down with very hot water and the old glue melted away. Then dried well and sprayed it with 3M and layed down the headliner material, looks great!!

I tried doing my own years ago.....did like what you said....removed the liner, wire brushed off all the foam, etc....here it is at least 5 years later and I'm back to square 1. So I don't know where I went wrong.

I will offer this piece of advice....when laying down the adhesive, don't lay down too much in one spot...or it will bleed thru when you go to press the foam down. That was another mistake I made. And....now the only good thing is that's the only part of the headliner that "hasn't" sagged.

It may have been the adhesive you used……I do not recommend 3m Super 77 for headliners…I used American’s AT-SA All purpose Spray Adhesive….the trim shop that I received the material from recommended it….. and it worked great…

I didn't use Super 77, I used the other kind....I forgot what it's called, but it's by 3M it's something like 08090 or something like that. It's supposed to be like the toughest stickiest adhesive out there.
