i have a friend that is pushing 127 through the traps locked up on a 28" tall tire. He is pushing 6000 rpms in 3rd at 127. This equates to 15% loss through the locked converter. How is it losing anything when its locked. You can see the rpm drop from 5850 at 100ish down to 5200 when he locks it. It slowly builds rpm back up. Can it be pushing through the clutch but only slightly? I can't imagine a single disk clutch (local 10" converter) could even survive a 10 second run after the clutch slips a few times but it has many many passes on it. We made sure the car had 3.42s so the calculations should be sound. Third gear does not slip at all so what else can be causing this. His converter is very very loose when not locked up (5800 at 100mph unlocked) It has efficiencys in the 35-40% loss range if the calculations hold true. (seems very similar to turbojimmys converter post below) The car has run 103 in the 1/8th and only 127 in the 1/4 if that helps bring some pieces of the puzzle come together.

Dunno if this helps any....but here's a little info from one of my passes last year, around the same level as your friend.

10.58 @ 131.63 mph tcc l/u @ 5950 rpm dropped to 5625 rpm.

Car went 104.78mph in the 1/8th mile.

Mine is a single disc l/u conveter built by a local company

It has probably 30 10 second passes on it that were all locked up. They inspected it this winter and said all was good. Clutch was in good shape and ready for more lock-ups. :D

it appears the converter clutch is slipping after apply.very common around here.we need to pool all of this info together and get to the real cause.
