My friend is in need of a cam for his 87 GN and his girlfiend wants to buy it for him for Christmas. Need help deciding which one because I don't know much about turbo Buicks. What I know about the car is it has champion ironheads, yellow top injectors (not sure size), 63 precision turbo, and has a stall but don't know the size. I know it needs to be a hydraulic. Would appreciate any help. Thanks

Well, how good of a girlfriend is she--a $250'ish for hyd flat-tappet, or a $800'ish for hyd roller...

I would go with A roller 212/212. but A 212/212 flat will be ok to.Dan at DLS can take care of your cam needs.

Hyd flat-tappet, he wants a roller but needs a new cam for now. She bought him a solid roller cam for his nova for his b-day, said she will not spend that much again.

Also, will the friend of the girl be doing the installation??

I'd be tempted to have her give a certificate/credit/cash equivalent, & let the object of her affection make the ultimate selection/decision...

She wants to buy him a cam because out of the two years that he has owned the car, it has only run for about three weeks. Now, he only needs a cam just to get it running (the cam in it now has a flat lobe).

I think you should talk him into waiting until he can go spend the coin on a hyd. roller.

She does not need to buy a cam. She needs to talk him in pulling the motor to re-bearing it,or just a rebuild. All that metal is in the motor . would not be idea to just put another cam in it.

Hi,
I think the significant other has better things to spend her money on than camshafts, but bless her for the thought, anyway. In these trying economic times,I think a mild flat tappet Comp cam should be adequate. I think the one I run is still under $100,and a kit will run $200+. Don't forget pushrods; Smith bros. are the ones to talk to.

The motor only has 250 miles on it, i think it was like that when he bought it. The motor that was in the car when he bought it only lasted 87 miles. And the motor is out of the car and everything eles looks good.

She buys him car parts and he buys her whatever she wants, i guess it works out good for both. Now if i could talk my wife into that i would have a great xmas.

I'll let this be my final input (word of caution) here...

The flat-tappet cam probably failed due to improper break-in procedure and, the next flat-tappet cam COULD suffer the same demise if not broken-in v e r y p r o p e r l y . . .

Like allready mentioned if the engine has a wiped cam lobe, the engine needs to be pulled out of the car and taken to a machine shop hopefully one with turbo buick experience and have them disassemble, clean, inspect, and replace the rings and cam,rod and main bearings before you just throw another cam in it.

If you don't do this the engine will be back in a non - running condition in a very short time and you will be out the price of a camshaft, gaskets, labor and then have to do the above anyway plus buying new cam and lifters.

Fullthrottlespeed.com can provide everything you need in the way of roller cams and kits or flat tappet cam, lifters, pushrods.

I would get the roller cam kit if at all possible, it will pretty much guarantee you won't have another wiped cam lobe and will save you money in the long run.

Thanks for the info, and yes i know roller would be better. The motor was used when he bought it so the cam was already broken in. I told her to buy something else for him. Thanks anyways.
