I have a friend with an 84 T with an older Spearco intercooler kit (just installed) No other mods. He is haveing idle problems (will not idle under 1000 rpms without dying) other wise runs fines. OTC monitor show me nothing out of whack. Do anyone have any experience with a setup like this? The tb is still attached to the turbo. Thanks.

What chip is he running? Tps is okay? What ecm does he run? The 84/85 Ecm tend to go bad over time and start causing issue. Let me know what you find out.

Do a search, heard something a long time ago about idle problems after installing a spearco kit.

thanks

Thanks for the replys--He is out of state--will see him next month. Already tried anothe ECM--maybe didn/t give it enough miles.

Mine had the same problem when I installed my Spearco kit back in 96. The numbers looked good, all new sensors, tried different chips, did the usual searching for vacuum leaks, etc. That's what made me move the TB to the pressure side near the intake. Once I moved it, the idle was perfect, throttle response was back, much better spool, and seemed to have more power but could've felt that way because of the faster spool.

Hey Lee, I can come down next time he is there and bring my 87 ECM, MAF and we can toy with it to see if that works.

May have a leak at the intake where that tube goes in. Dont know, but if you need help, just get a hold of me.

V2 turbomotion kit

I went with the V2 turbo motion setup. The throttle body is on the intake, and the intake is a very well constructed piece. Whoever was doing there designing and fabrication was a smart guy.

Dont have it on the car yet but is fairly simple.

Idle adjustment

Lee, what is the TPS? IAC? you need the TPS to be .42 and the IAC in the 20's or as close as you can get to that. I had issues until I got the idle to about 750-800 after the car idle adjustment were set I never had any problems and ran the Spearco intercooler kit for 2 years. I now have the J&S conversion and it doesn't idle any better than with the Spearco kit.

MRBUICK, what turbo were you running and do you have any dyno sheets or time slips. Just would like to know what people are running with intercooler conversions.

Thanks
Matt

Dyno

I plan on taking mine to a buddy's shop and running it on the dyno. Just waiting for my Turbotweak Alky chip to arrive.

I have a JS Intake, stock 87 IC, alky, blue tops with a TA33.

When I go I will post the results!

Spearco Intercooler

At that time I had a stock turbo, (small 390 cfm), Smc alcohol injection, Caspers 8 step chip, Hooker exhaust system, High flow Catalytic converter, 30 lb disc injectors (stock replacements), Walbro fuel pump, adjustable fuel regulator, K&N filter in stock air cleaner housing, stock exhaust headers, up-pipe, down-pipe, stock transmission and converter. The car ran high 13's on 93 octane, 18 lbs boost. I think it could have run better on race gas and sticky rear tires.

Pictures of Spearco Intercooler

Lee, I have pictures of the Spearco intercooler and some of the changes I have made to the car over the last two years on Webshots.com under member MrBuick101 look under 84 Buick GN and 1984 Buick GNX Clone
The idle was a problem at first, but once I got it adjusted right I could reach in through the window, turn the key, start the car, and it would start and idle smooth as silk with out touching the gas pedal. I had no hesitation on acceleration. The car ran hotter, so I switched over to Ramcharger fans and a V-8 four core radiator.

Mine idled kind of ok with the stock turbo. Don't know what kind of turbo he has but the bigger, the worse it idles with the Spearco kit. Again, been there done that.

I bought a spearco and BG headers/0 to 60 3 inch downpipe from a guy in Arizona (Jack Willson) and he adapted the spearco with the throttlebody coming of the adapter in the intake. He had it on a 4.1 engine. No lag instant throttle. I am posting pix. If more need, I came take pix tonight.
 Can't post here is a link....

I have not install the intercooler, so I can take pix of the adapter. Leeo, I have not doubt that YOU can make this adapter  . If you look on my site you will notice our buddy, Scott Porter's handy work... He took a 2 1/2 90 degree bend and welded it to the stock intake manifold and connect with hoses and clamps th throttle body.
