High oil pressure when I prime up cold

I need some advice. I purchased a engine from a member a couple of years ago. I am finally ready to start. When I prime the oil pump I am seeing almost 70 psi. This worries me. I don't know if it has the hv pump kit but I would think it does with this pressure. I am concerned about blowing gaskets and blowing oil every where. What should I do to lower or crank it and see what it is when it is hot, then make a decision.
 
Check and see what spring is in the bypass. Most everyone put's the heaviest spring in it thinking it will raise running pressure when it's main job is to relieve pressure when the oil is cold.
 
Ok I have a hv pump kit that I am not using it has a yellow, blue, brownish and another set of longer springs and they are purple, brown, and redish. Which one should I use.

The kit should have paperwork inside.
The following #'s are approximate.
blue is 70lb
yellow is 60lb
orange is 40lb

I have a orange in mine and still get around 60psi cold.

you can swap the spring out with only a litle leakage but i would leave it alone , 70 cold is not a problem and thats what i want to see at prime , if you were seeing 100 i could see because that would indicate an issue with the bypass not opening or a restriction in the oil path
get it running and at op temp and see where the pressure goes

and fyi you dont need a high volume pump to see 70 on prime , so your assumption that it is a HV is invalid
 
At least for the valve covers you do. You would be surprised how much crankcase pressure needs to get out under boost. You need catch cans with -10 line and big breathers. One on each cover. I let mine vent to atmosphere but can be set up to recirculate. You would need can's with 2 ports instead of 1 and more line and fittings.
 
Why the hell are you worried about almost 70 psi oil pressure? :confused:

My cars are above that level on a cold [50 deg.] start, and most engines we run up before shipping are usually at that level, and we NEVER use a HV oil pump kit.

Idle oil pressure at operating temp is 35-40 psi, maybe a little less after a WOT blast! :)

I believe the catch can post was made in reference to another thread I posted to this morning. Nothing to do with the op's topic.

No you don't NEED catch cans but they are nice to have to catch any oil that comes out. 9 out of 10 tb's spray oil out the breathers under high boost.

Paul, surprised those salt and pepper shakers are doing the job but hey what do I know..
