Are any of you "hot air" guys/gals running E85? How is it working for you?

long time lurker

I THINK YOU ARE READING MY MIND>>>

i was going to start a thread about this , but you beat me to it. I have been here patienly waiting for the responses to come rolling in, but noone has???

has noone done this yet>>???

i have been reading up a ton....

i want to hear others doing this.

e85 is available within 10 miles of my house. I have a hotair, It never gets driven long distances. I probably wont drive it much in the winter. I was pondering meth injection anyway. Someone tell me why this WOULDNT be a good idea. Cooler intake charge, high octane, etc.

more info:The car isnt a daily driver. its a 85 gn.

i am going to try to put this car in the 11's. I know, i know.. its a hotair..call me hardheaded. but i traded a thirdgen gta even for it. Sorry, ill work with what i got for now.

since i got the car about a month and a half ago i have done the following..a TRE 255 pump hotwired, accufab regulator, erics turbo tweak street chip, 160 stat, fbody rad, used a big shrouded saturn ion electric fan, homemade aluminum intake tube/cold air, 87 ecm,87 maf. Its making 13-14 pounds right now and runs pretty good.

im planning on bypassing tb coolant and egr, putting in set of siemens deka 60# injectors (i have some in my toolbox still waiting for install) , getting a tt chip for the 60s and e85 ,probably do a 60-1 and converter,MT drag radials, bag in the right rear.etc.

anyone doing the e85 thing PLEASE chime in with info.

Sounds like you have a good start. Have you gotten a 3 BAR map sensor? Running 100% E85 should be much better than gasoline w/alcohol injection! The octane is 105 and the cooling effect of 85% ethanol should be superior to a little methanol injection. Go for it. Just make sure your fuel system is up to the task! I would suggest new valve springs, plugs and wires.

Hot Air

been running various blends of E85 and regular gas since about a month after i got the car in '04. it makes the best power on straight E85, but best mileage at 50% E85 and 50% 87 octane.

plugs n wires check:) no valvesprings yet. Maybe ill do some lt1s when i pull turbo and stuff off to do injectors and valve cover gaskets!

I ditched the FMIC so I'm a Hot Air now.

Spray it with Meth and you're really in business, hit it with Preturbo and now we're getting greedy at the turbo compressor. ;)

I have a brand new set applied technologies valvesprings. They are for a stock cam replacement and are essentially the lt1 valvesprings. I have the specs for them. If you want them they are yours for free, just pay for the shipping. :eek:James

e-85 and hotair sounds like a really good idea, if i had a hotair buick that would just about be the first modification i'd do.

ditto , different platform but hopefully you find it relevant:

several 3800 sc cars running around on e85 - these cars also come factory without intercoolers ( allthough many add them) , typically you see e 85 guys running a 3.1 or 3.2 pulley on a car with supporting mods that would typically only support a 3.4 or 3.5 - easily adding 2-3 psi

this takes a mid 13's car to cracking 12's in many cases

in the 3800 sc world you typically see approx double the injector size , a big pump like the tre 255 mentioned above ( I installed one in anticipation of future fuel swap sunday)
, fuel injector o rings updated frm rubber to viton , and a swap to the later plastic tank.

apparently metal & rubber dont care for e 85 and I am assuming your TR's have more of those to address ? ( you know what they say about assuming:D)

stoich will have to be changed in the tune - e85 stoich is 9.87 vs. 14.7 for premium fuel or if you are like my state and have e 10 ( 10% ethanol ) you may have changed stoich to 14.13 ( it sure smoothed my tune out)

the ethanol doesn't affect the steel gas tanks or rubber fuel lines.
we've had 10% ethanol in all gas in MN for 20 years or so- and i've been playing with cars for about that long- and i've never seen a gas tank rot from the inside or fuel lines become brittle and fall apart.

I've been running 100% E-85 in the White car for years, no rot or problems. The issue is with Methanol not Ethanol, I suspect the myths continue on the internet.

So what is the suggested combo to run e85. I have a hot air and would like do do something different. E85 isn't in my town yet (yeah I'm in the sticks) but it is about 20 miles or so down the road. What injector size/type is required. Also what pump, chip and other mods are needed. My current mods are in my sig.
Thanks, Steve

Steve,
E85 mods are irrespective of Hot Air or Intercooled. You will just get more bang for the buck with a hot air car. It all boils down to adequate, dependable fuel supply and an E85 chip or FAST. Read the "Stickys". Then ask specific questions.

Bump, all my searches come back with old posts from 2009, any recent results? Any times with a stock turbo?

Jamie's gotten in the 10's with E-85 and running a very modified HA. Turbonut85 is also running it I believe but don't know what times he's done so far.

Nice, I just can't wait for spring! Plan to run E-85, an upgraded turbo and maybe a torque converter.

I think Brent might be running E85 now. He lurks in from time to tiime. He may chime in. My new combo will have 83lb injectors, Deutschwerks pump and E85.

Yup, I run it. Making lots of power with it. 10's on it is to easy with my setup. 9s is no problem on it depending on the setup..
