I'm looking at buying a Grand National and I want to make sure it's a GN and not a Turbo T or whatever other model they make. Can you tell from the VIN number are something else? It's a 1987 GN. Thanks.

the code for GN on the vin number was never used. The best way to tell is to check the sticker under the trunk It gives all the numbers for the Grand national. The Grand national came in all black and it had the black and silver seats with the turbo v6 logo on the head rest. Not all GN had the intercooler also. I do beleave that the IC didnt show up untill 86 I could be wrong thow. the 87 gn were all black 86 had a silver grill over the radator. Hope this helps

For one you can tell my the markings on the car, but sometimes people will change them.

Check the vin, and the RPO code that is in the trunk for the right numbers.
In 87, the t-type and GN had different vins if i'm not mistaken.
But rpo will tell for sure.

the GN's and the T-type regals did not have diffrent vins. If they did then i think my insurence would have gone up. They think that its a stock regal. I laugh at them HA HA
um sorry got a little carryed away there

Open the Trunk and find the RPO Label. The RPO Label is a sticker put on all GM cars that displays all of the vehicles options. The Grand National option code is WE2. Look on the label for that code. If it has it the car is a Grand National.

Another Code of interest is 'G80' Which is the option code for a Posi Rear.

Wait till you get $1000 from your car being totaled.

I just called the guy and asked him to email me a picture of the the tag on the decklid so I should be able to check the options tonight. There's just a few things that make me wonder if it's a true GN like it has the Turbo T style wheels on it and the Grand National badge on the rear decklid is on the drivers side and I think it's supposed to be on the passenger side but I could be wrong. It does have the gray and black seats with the turbo 6 emblem in the headrest. It is intercooled and he says it has a posi. My insurance told me the same thing when I checked on it, doesn't show a GN just a regal:D

Beat me to it.:D

You know, the funny thing is I work for an insurance company and have access to the list of cars that are frowned upon and there are vehicles noted on it that couldn't pull a sick hooker off the toilet.....but the mighty TR is not mentioned.

there is a reason why i had an apraisle done on my car. A few years ago a GN was stolen. The car had some work done to it. The cops chaced the car untill it was doing 140 on the highway so they followed it with a helicopter. The guy that had stolen the car blew the engine and diched it in grass. The engine was so hot that it caugh the grass on fire and the car burnt up. The insurance company gave the owner about $2000 for it. The guy that worked on the car had it apraised. with that the apraser took it to cort and the owner got the full amount of what the car was realy worth.;)

You would need to take that figure to the insurance agent and have them refigure your cost.

Thats why people pay for insurance, if everyone paid the same price and got different settlements it wouldn't workout.

I had the agent actaully look at my car and they said it would still be covered by how much I was paying per month (full coverage of course)

Pray that you're never in that situation, but be prepared to fight it out with your ins. co. I even save my receipts for filters and whatnot. If one can, it's often best to end up with Hagerty or someone like that.....

Your right I pray that i would never get into that mess. I have been keeping my GN in the garage alot lately. The number of stolen GN's Is on the rise in the Northern CA airea. last month a GNX was stollen and a couple of weeks ago 2 GN's were stolen. and I will talk to the insurence company about the car if my wife will ever stop yelling at me about having to spend money for insurance. I hate being the one who caused the topic to go off subject and i am sorry about that. Lets get back to the first question. how to tell if you have a real GN
