They seem to be one of the greatest things going for tuning, but how do they work? 8 pos, 16 pos, What does all this mean. I'm thinking about it, but I don't know if it's what I want.

I love my 16 pos. Like Bruce said, it allows YOU to fine tune the fueling for many different parameters. Right out of the box it will be VERY close but you may want/need to fine tune some of the parameters. I adjusted my Cruise fueling and it made a big difference in gas milage.
For racing you would just turn the Thumbwheel (TW) one click to either richen the mixture or lean it out. You do this instead of adjusting the fuel psi all the time.
just fyi the 16 position thumbwheels have 15 -available- fueling positions. positions available are 0-F (which you computer guys should know is hex, 16 total possibilities), and 0 is nostart/program. I'm pretty darn sure the 8 position is the same way. 0 is nostart/program and then you have 1-7 to toy with.
speaking of thumbwheel.. i called the local electronics shop and asked if they had any thumbwheel selectors... the guy said "I dont know what that is."
Jay, Caspers has the Thumbwheels too. Sleeper6, read all the info avail on the posted web-sites for MaxEffort. Steve's chip has been the answer to all my problems and his support is second to nobody.Positively worth the investment regarding a chip, the very last you'll ever buy for your TR.
