How fast on stock IC

Since you've got an Alky kit to help cool your charge: Flow would be your next concern. Is there a Duttweiler mod on your stock IC?

an engine builder i talked to told me with the stock intercooler its a big restriction for the air to flow,

he compared it to me breathing through a straw

is this true?

and the intercooler is always neccessary? how much more does it cool it off?

is it possible to just route it hot air setup and will the alky still cool it down enough or not nearly close?

just a thought

I thought there was an article floating around somewhere where they tested a car with no IC but using alky. Can't remember where I saw it though.

The duttweiler neck is certainly a big help.

Some will say you can't go fast unless you bolt a monster IC on the front of your car. Well John Huber just went 10.98 @121MPH with a TA49 and a stock IC with a duttneck! And that was at one of the worst tracks in the world! Atco! So ask your engine builder if he thinks 10.98 is slow!!

The cooler and denser the aircharge, the better. The cooler the air before the alky is injected, the better. With alky: The biggest problem the stock IC poses is flow. You've opened up the output(exhaust) with a 3" downpipe and bigger duals, but haven't opened up the input(intake). All internal combustion engines are air pumps. The more air, and the faster they they can pump it, the more horsepower they are producing. That's why porting, bigger valves/cams/throttle bodies, etc can yield high HP numbers with less PSI/boost(when everything else is in place). Greater CFM can take the place of high PSI. Long story short: Get a Dutt Neck or a stretch SLIC(all I've seen have better/smoother transition and flow than the stock IC). You'll feel it in the seat of your pants.

If you run the stock intercooler keep the engine rpm down and the boost up high. The higher the boost the lower the engine speed to reduce pressure drop across the core. Locking the converter is a must. Spray a lot of alky in there also

no he didnt , he has a "MONSTER I/C" ... a PTE front mount w/3" pipes
i ve been 11.31 119.96 on my duttnecked stocker with a little 44 , a little better launch and a couple more lbs ( maybe run at 25) and ill be knocking on 10s

stock I/C is about a 5.52psi restriction (20psi plenum is really 25.52 at turbo outlet ), duttneck drops the restriction to about 3.62psi
the cas v2 fmic was about 3.28psi restriction , pte is one of the best flowing at only 1.75 pressure drop, but the CAS v2 scored high on heat reduction

heres the tests

TTA with a 44 turbo , blue top inj, race gas (no alky back then ) stock converter with a stock intercooler with a Dutt neck. 11.2/11.3 @ 121 with all season tires to boot ..That was back in maybe 96/98 .. DAMMMMM 10 years ago

You can go pretty fast with it. It is a bottle neck. You need to decide if you want to keep it for a certain reason or is an upgrade a better choice all the way around...

IMO, if you are not going for the "stock" look once you hit the high 11's it is worth upgrading to a aftermarket IMO... The dutt neck is cool but you still have a 20+ yr old I/C that unless you have had repaired I garuntee you it leaks somewhere:wink:

I couldn't be bothered doin a "neck" on a stock intercooler these days .. that was 1988 technology :p

Thanks for all the replies and the attached reading. I printed it off and will take it with me today. I did order a new stretched slic and I’m trying to reassure myself I did the right thing. I’m trying to find what improvements I should do to yield the largest gains without out going into the motor. I also want to make improvements that will aid in the new motor when that time comes. I’m currently running 60ft 1.8, 1/8 7.6 @90+mph. Will this new slic make me faster?

Thanks again.
Chad

Been wondering about this myself. Some of you claim the Dutt neck mod is old school....but for a budget would be ok right? I mean not all of us has $700 + to just drop on a new IC. Trust me I'd love to have a stretch slic, heard lots of good things about them.

87Regal,

Read the attachment post #9 put in. It shows how the neck compares to the others. It's definatley is an improvement over stock and a cheaper way to go but it does not keep up with a stretched. I decided against the neck just because I did not want to spend a couple hundred bucks on a stock IC that I would eventually have to upgrade anyway. If you watch the boards you can pick a used stretch in the $450 range.

The cost is cheaper... Remember you got to find someone to cut and weld it on! Also remember you no longer have a "stock IC" to put back on if need be...

Have yours tested first to see how bad it is leaking before you invest either way!

Good luck!

The outlet on the turbo is 2 inches on all AR60 covers.

The bend and core are the issue.
