How much transmission oil does the pan holds!

I just replaced the transmission oil filter and refilled the trans with 5 quarts of AMSOIL. After starting up the car and going through the gears to circulate the oil throughout all of the oil passages in the transmission I checked the oil dipstick and there was no oil on the stick. How much oil does the stock trans require when the oil filter is replaced? I thought it would normally be 4 quarts but ???? I tried a search but nothing turned up.

I've always ended up at 7 to 8.

I was beginning to think that maybe I did not have a correct dipstick for the transmission.
