I Need A Car... Need Advice

I need a car because my TB gets between 9 and 12mpg on the road and freeway I am 6 foot 4 and 280+ lbs. Cars nowadays are made for soccer moms and people 5'5" and shorter who are overcompensating for something:biggrin:... I need a car/truck that gets good gas mileage, roomy, and can carry 4 or more people and less than 900 dollars!!!! I was looking at a 1975 monte carlo with a 350sb for 600, and an old El Camino that was near completley rusted, but with a fresh 350 engine. all it was was a rusted body with 2 seats and a good engine. I was told to look at a Corolla, or an accord, but they are 2 small. Next step was an Altima, comfortable and fast. Last but not least a Ford Taurus, very cheap, affordable, comfortable, reliable, and can carr 5 to 6 people. PLEASE HELP.....!

I prefer a v6 or v8 but a big 4 banger will do

Personally, I would go with the Ford Taurus w/ the vulcan engine. Very dependable and easy to maintain. I think it's the best bang for the buck for a used car. They are dime a dozen out there on the road. My 1996 had over 247,000 miles and still going strong before I decided to replace it with a 2001 Mercury Sable.

I'm 6'4" and 300 or more at times:biggrin: I love the Grand Prix. They have a ton of room inside and if you get the GTP they are kind of fun. You can't get more reliable than a 3800. I've had 5 of them since 2002. Before I modded them they got 26 mpg average. After I modded they still got good hwy mileage but the average was 18 but they ran mid 12's

Maybe you guys aren't reading his whole post? He said less than $900. For that kind of cash you're looking at a pre-'97 Toyota or Honda. Can't go wrong with an Accord or Camry. They're 4 cylinders but they'll run forever and parts are dirt cheap.

If you can find an 89 Olds 88 Mine has 200K+ on it now. The only things I do to it are change the oil and plugs on a regular basis. Service the tranny once in a while ect. the only major problems I've had are cam sensor failure along with a timing chain and tensioner. On the highway I get close to 28mpg and once in a while go over it slightly. One of the best cars GM ever built.

Get your foot out of the throttle man, that gas mileage is terrible for your TR! Hell my heads/cam/supercharged/nitrous LT1 car got a lot better than that.

Im not in the throttle. On the highway the car sound like it runs hard as in its in the 4k rpm range in OD I drive like a sane person in my TB, and it aint even all that fast. my cars gas mileage is probably bad because the timing is probably off, its carburated, and the engine could use a good rebuild. and as 4 your engine... stop rubbin it in

my friend has one and its nice. Its a coupe with the FE3 suspesion package, with the velvet interior, and killer beats and sound system. It really bumps:biggrin: thats a good car.

For the price range you want, it looks like asking for a lot.

Now, don't flame me... You asked...
How about a Ford Festiva? Yes, it's a gutless 1.3L engine (That can be easily swapped- cheaply). 40+ mpg. Surprising amount of room. And Super cheap. Average one is less than $500. Almost impossible to kill one of these cars also.

It's really not a bad little car. It seats 4-5 people tightly. If it's a commuter car, then this will work just fine. I spoke with a guy yesterday who ran nitrous on his stocker and swapped over to a turbo set-up. Now running a turbo 1.8L and it flys!

Sure you can go wrong with a Camry. Google "toyota sludge".... I learned my lesson with them. For the OP's price range, it would fall in the less than well maintained pool of Camrys. The V6 2VZFE engine is notorious for sludge build up and failure. Just beware of the older toyota engines, mainly the V6 versions.

If you're buying a V6 for less than 900 you should be expecting problems. An early 90s Accord or Camry will be just fine.
