How does the Paint Process look?

Brent,
Thanks for the encouragement.

Well, the T-top rails needed some repair on both sides.
The shop formed some sheet metal pieces, and stitch welded them in place.
Bottom of the doors and trunk lid had flash rust as well.
Also got some GM T-top/door seals, and all SS T-top components from GBodyParts. So, the $4K guestemate is on the low side

It was rude of me to stamp a guestemate on your ride Jerryl. but Man it seems to me your gonna have one nice car when it's all done. ;) Kewl!! Keep the pics a flowin. :) I'll be doing this in 6 months or less.

Brent, I did not take your guestemate as being rude at all. I could tell from the complete post that you are a sincere comrad. It is no big deal.
Look forward to you sharing your pictures!

Edit;
I also know from reading that you have 1 B@D@$$ ride!

I hope they have enough sense to paint your filler panels with a different mix of paint with the flex additive. I bought replacement fillers for a 84 Olds I had and a local shop I use shot them for free. I got what I paid for. No flex additive and the paint was cracking and flaking off in a couple months.

I wished i had posted sooner, at first i thought you were kidding when there was tape over the 1/4 windows:eek:

Your getting great advice, you need to remove your wheels from the car asap, they are gonna get screwed up from being in the shop!

Here is something else you should do

I just went back and took another look, are the door handles still in the doors? What about the locks?

Those should be removed.

Do you have anymore pictures, glad the mirrors are out, but everything needs to be removed to paint it right.

4k:eek:

Please let us help you make this paint job right!

Thanks Brian!
The handles and locks are removed.
The fillers will be painted with some fiberglass compatible paint as advised.
The back will be disassembled. (New fillers on the way as well)
1/4 Windows and trim will now be removed.

You think $4K is overpriced?

More pics to come. Thanks all for the advice!

Are you going to remove the black piece i circled on that horrible excuse for a photoshop job?

Get those pictures to us

Did you remove the dew sweeps for the drivers side and pass side doors?

Paint jobs suck and if you have done it a time or two, the process isnt something that you would ever forget!

Grill and front bumper off?

Bumpers torn completely apart and painted in the same fashion?

Yes, I will have it removed.

.... Did you remove the dew sweeps for the drivers side and pass side doors? .........
You mean the outer belt modling? (Yes, they have been removed)

............ Grill and front bumper off?
Bumpers torn completely apart and painted in the same fashion?
Yes, these will come off and bumpers will be dissasembled and painted seperately. That is the plan.

Edit:
I need to figure out the wheel thing.
I do not have a spare set. :(

Make sure you do some detailing before you put it back together. Buy new door handle gaskets, lock cylinder gaskets and caps, mirror gaskets, etc. Gbodyparts knows what you need to finish it.

Thanks Brian!

As long as the shop puts everything back together neatly, $4k today does not sound bad at all.

I hope that ur car will be painted in an oven.
Ask the body shop if they have a cheap set of steel rims or go to ur local junk yard. Just get them quick!

Frank

pretty much what everyone says, glass, locks , etc. The real question is how nice do you want it. I own my paint shop here and I have to put up with this everyday. Tell them exactly what you want and get the price. If you want to add stuff expect the price to go up! Bottom line man. There is a huge diffrence in a daily driver paint job and a show job. Don't expect to get them for the same price tag. 4 grand is cheap when you are talking a show job and I won't do it for that! I'm talking soda blasting the car and starting from the bottom up on paint. Welding in new metal, price goes up, more I take off the more price go's up. If you want it cheap then take it to macco, it will look nice enough to sell real fast. If you want it done right then the days of 1000 dollor paint jobs are over guys. For Tec glamour clear , it costs me 245 a gallon and that does not include the other parts that go with it. A shop can spend close to 1000 bucks in the paint alone depending on what you want.
Also , I am not a big fan on the oven bake deal. A warm booth is all you need to me and I like the idea of the paint having time to cure, not cook! But thats just me. It gets enough cooking here in south georgia during the summer lol. Daniel Ray

Frank,
thanks for posting.
Shop does not have an oven and not sure if I would want it oven cured.
The price tag is north of $4K

Daniel Ray,
As a body man, you hit the nail on the hat. :)
Everyting that is disassembled, painted and re-assembled will cost $$$$, and that is just the way it is. This intent of the car is not to be at shows and win/run with the Big Boys. It is a DD, and, the question I had to answer is "how much" do I want to spend on a slow @$$ Hot Air?

Seriously, I could have asked for a 12K paint job, but that is not realistic, not in the budget and and definately not a good idea for a DD. The shop is doing a good job so far, and for a DD, it will look GREAT! This is not a garage queen by any means.

It will have a working radio antenna when done.

4K should get you a good job as long as there isn't alot of rust. Did you look at their previous work?

Good luck!

Interesting note on the disadvantages of painting a car in an oven. I never knew that there were disadvantages to using an oven. On the assembly line, isnt the paint dried in an oven?

Isn't it cleaner to paint a car in a booth so as to avoid tiny dust particles.
I have seen cars that were painted in a shop (not in an oven) and there were dust particles all over the dried paint.

How do u prevent these dust particles and where do you let the car dry?

thanks
Frank

Frank, The oven is just me, I like the idea of it having time to slowly vent out the reducer from the paint instead of praticaly boiling it out. Also it seems to make it less brittle to me.
It is cleaner in a booth for sure but the reality is you will still have some dust particles even in the best booth there is. It comes off your clothes, hair, shoes, its not just the booth. Its the painter as well. As long as its just dust particals and not dirt! You just let it dry and then buff her out. I have just one booth and I am a small shop so when I get one painted I usually run the booth fan for about an hour after I am done then let the car stay in the booth overnight. Production shops that are in it for fast money and to get out a lot of cars use the oven cure set up to speed drying time so they can get another one in asap. The same deal on factory cars, running that many cars a day thur the line, they don't have time to wait overnight on them!! More cars done, more money. I am NOT the know it all on paint guys lol. I am just telling you what works for me and what I personnaly like. Daniel Ray

ps take your wheels off NOW!!!!!!!! I have a old set of rallys that I usually put on customers cars and put theirs up while I am working on it so if they get primer, etc on them it doesn't matter. I never leave them on anyway when I paint one. I put it on stands and pull the tires off so I can get the lips good. Daniel Ray

Shane,
There isn't much rust on the car at all.
The frame and floorboards are solid and the only real "rust" was limited to the T-tops.

The shop's previous work looked real good.
Other shops quoted MUCH higher, but would have done more than I thought was needed, for example; One shop would have blasted the complete body, but that is overkill for a DD in my opinion.

Thank you for taking the time to post.

Yeah, I know. Here is a question though .......
If they cover the wheels (which they did) will it still ruin/damage them?

It's just a matter of keeping ur wheels clean and free of body shop dust- sanding dust, paint residue, etc.

Even if the wheels are covered really well, when those covers come off,the car will have to sit for reassembly and that means more dust.

Dont take the covers off until u are ready to drive out of the body shop.
