Probably not the dealer can't resell the cars that fall under the clunker program they have to junk them big fines if they get caught i think they have to register the vins on the ones they take in on clunker trade

it's probably owned by the owner of the dealership or one of the salesmen.
or maybe it's being sold on consignment.
maybe it's a car that the dealership has had on display for a while, and they need to get it out of the way to make for the '10 Prius display vehicles.

i see how this is gonna work- from now on, every older collectible car that happens to be at a new car dealer is going to be suspected of being a "cash for clunker" trade in, regardless of how stupid anyone would be to trade it in under that program or for the dealership to accept it under that program knowing that they can only resell it for scrap value.....

I was thinking the GN was ineligible but...

July 28, 2009

Just as the Environmental Protection Agency was kicking 78 vehicles off the eligibility list, it added in 86 that didn't make the cut before. Some clunker owners out there are having a lucky day.

1 1987 Buick Regal :o
2 1987 Cadillac Brougham
3 1987 Chevrolet Caprice
4 1987 Chevrolet G10/20 Van 2WD
5 1987 Chevrolet R10 Pickup 2WD
6 1987 Chevrolet T10 Blazer 4WD
7 1987 Chevrolet T10 Pickup 4WD
8 1987 GMC G15/25 Vandura 2WD
9 1987 GMC R15 Pickup 2WD
10 1987 GMC T15 Jimmy 4WD

not every Regal is desirable, and that list doesn't really break it down by what options the car has. a V6 car is going to have a different mileage rating than a 307 car.
is the Grand National on the list of "clunkers"?

Let me rephrase I wonder if this was an intercepted clunker trade.

Possibly the dealer knew the car was worth more as a resale.

Seriouslly doubt anybody who owned a low mileage GN didn't know what the true value was. Lets put it this way. Even if they bought it yesterday or 20 years ago, they paid some good script to get it. Kind of like owning a Corvette.

But I do see where a dealer could beat the system. Say somebody wants the $4500 clunker bonus. Now if a dealer thought they could flip it for a handsome profit all they would need to do is play hardball with the customer. Instead of getting, say for example more than $4500 for the trade, they tell the customer they have 2 ways on their trade. Take $4500 from Uncle Barry or take $4500 from the dealership. Hey that's the price you pay for being lazy or stupid. The dealer pays the $4500 instead of the government cutting the check and they get to put the car on the lot and make some money.

The odds of someone owning a car like that and not knowing it are slim. Also these cars get good enough mileage that they won't be eligible unless you're buying something very efficient.

On the clunker thing: The dealer doesn't get paid until after they prove the vehicle was sold to a salvage yard that is on the list of acceptable salvage yards. turbofish is right though, they could trade for a clunker and if they found a fool to give them more they could probably pull it off. But if the value of the vehicle is that borderline on $4500 the owner won't clunker it anyway. The three we've gotten so far are mid 90's trucks/suv's with over 200k on the clock. In a normal situation we'd struggle to get over $2500 out of any one of them. It is sad though to see someone "clunker" a vehicle that is equal to or nicer than what you're driving. Like the fully loaded 99 durango or the loaded 97 tahoe. Gotta drain the oil and fill it with sodium silicate solution and run it for several minutes to kill the engine. And the fines are big enough that the boss' prohibit us from scavenging anything off of them. The person trading them in gets to keep the money for the vehicle's salvage value also.

We actually had a person that wouldn't do it because the truck ran just fine and they thought it was a waste to have to crush it.

Yeah, I've got one of those...210k miles on the clock of my '94 truck..yeah I could get more $$ for it now by trading it..but then I have to spend an additional $15-20k to get a new one that won't run half as good as my '94 with the LT4 :D

I see collector cars at dealerships quit a bit, long before the govt clunker trade it was even thought of... I'm sure some of them the dealer stole from people not knowing and using them as a trade-in and dealers are always at auctions aquiring cars.... classics get repo'd like any other car that had a loan on it, and drug seizures, etc...

Sounds like our former employer, doesn't it Eric. That's exactly what they would've done too. "You learned well grasshopper".

They’re also asking $11,000 for a PT Cruiser. But; I’m sure the GN is part of an organized conspiracy to defraud the government.

Now that made me laugh. Just the other night I was talking about another gimmick that Slim Shady was good at. Any car is worth $3500. I don't know how many times I went to go home and some Noob Saleman had tucked one of those business cards under the wiper blade of the GN. Of course they would have loved to have me trade it in for true blue book. Funny thing was they they weren't too thrilled when I wanted to trade my trusty Roadmaster in after they found out it had 350K on the clock. It sucks when you really do get employee pricing.

Well you missed one of the best ones. Customer thought he got a great trade in at $3500 and he really got $1. Not joking. Anyone that sold the car got a heck of a bonus because it was all commision. Those guys were typical in the Nashburg area I'm sorry to say.

Sounds like the jerkoff at the Honda dealership trying to sell my step-daughter a car encouraging her not to get "her step-dad" involved... I came up there looked over the paperwork and he was actually charging her $300 over the sticker said and done with her trade in. Calmly told him he should rot in hell and I won't even offer a counter since he just lost our business at this point no matter what kind of deal he can do. Went and bought a Scion next day, drove it up there and parked it in front of his window and walked in told him if he wasn't such a j.a. moron he could have sold a car :D Sorry, just love to put arrogant older azzes with a bunch of gold on in their place :)

Would our cars really qualify for cash for clunkers?
It say they must be newer than 84 and get less than 18 mpg.

According to the official Website, cars.gov, the Vin A carb'd 6-cyl. cars are ineligible. The TRs & 307 cars are eligible.
