I have a TE60 than may or may ont need a rebuild. I've never rebuilt one but I thought I'd try my hand at doing so.

I know I can order a kit but my question is:

With all of the caked on build up from never being rebuilt, is there a recommeded procedure such as hot tanking or acid dipping before actually rebuilding?

And...do I really need to rebuild? -there is no shaft play in any direction however, when I manually spin the wheel on the DP side... it makes a sounds such as if it were ever so slightly binding on the caked up material (like running a blade across that material that Catalytic convertors are made of..) Is this normal?

TIA

We just rebuilt turbos off of some International diesels in school the other day, Navy C School,. It was pretty straight forward. As long as you remove all of the internal parts I dont see why you couldnt hot tank it. Make sure its good and clean when you reassemble it and lube the bushings and other parts with a light coat of engine oil. The kits we used were less than $100.
You can measuer axial and radial play with a dial indicator.
