Ive recently gotten my gn running thanks to some of you on this forum. Now Im needing some insight on what some good exhaust options are. Mine has the factory exhaust under it and it has a weird configured tranverse type muffler, unfortunately it has rusted out and the tail pipes have broken loose. I havent had any luck finding one that will work in the stock location. Most transverse are the inlets on one side and outlets on the other. As you all know ours is not set up that way.
While this might sound like a stupid question but Im not too familiar with a g body( was a fox mustang guy until I drove one of these) What would be a easily adaptable muffler(s) to use on a gn? Would a couple of traditional mufflers fit under the floorpans and not hang down to low and look stupid? Offset offset? offset center? Im sure most of you can rattle this answer off pretty easily
I am fine with mine being quiet or sounding agressive but not boy racerish.Any of you have something that would work and sound good without breaking the bank?

On another note is the turbo to downpipe connection a ball and socket or does it take a gasket? Mine is
leaking and sounds like crap. Thanks guys!!

What is your budget?
The Hooker Cat-Back system (Jeggs, Summit) is inexpensive, and from what I understand, is one of the quieter systems out there.
I am in the process of doing a 3-muffler system which has been talked about on here in the past but it is high $$ if you are starting from scratch but it's supposed to be dead quiet but flow like an open downpipe. I'll have approx. $750 in my stem not including the new downpipe I also ordered.

The turbo to downpipe is a flat plate from the downpipe that bolts to the turbo and doesn't have a gasket, although you can purchase a gasket for it from a vendor on this site.

I have new summit catalog Ill look into that one. Actually I prefer a quiet system, I would much rather hear that turbo wind up under the hood as a loud exhaust.Im not familiar with the three muffler set up, I am intrigued by that though. I suppose at this point I just want something to just get by with, while I normally hate spending money just to do it over again there are so many other areas on the car that need attention financially and that Im addressing.
Im just not crazy about the exhaust dumping straight out of the muffler right by the fuel tank( tail pipes have rusted off) so Im a little afraid to drive it.
As far as a realistic budget goes Id like to stay around the 500.00 range but it might be a little while before I can invest that. Paint, tires, walbro, hotwire and other assorted stuff has been draining my debit card haha.
I guess realistically Im just looking for something to get me by for a short while although I do like the sound of a bolt on cat back system.

I just did the Pypes 2.5" dual system on my car but I opted to not use the Pypes Racepro mufflers as I cant stand drone. I instead installed Dynomax VT mufflers. Quiet enough at cruise speeds to have a conversation in the car, but open up at full throttle. Zero drone at cruise speed. I am very happy with the sound. Under $500.00 and stainless pipes and mufflers.

Looks about the same as the ATR unit? my atr exhaust clears with the HR bar. mounting points look alittle different, is that the area of concern?

Yup. Mark has a pic of a customer that installed with the HR bar but you can see he has perch spacers. my car launches hard ! I destroyed both tailpipes on my Hooker system that was on the car when I bought it. The person that installed it put the tailpipes too close to the back side of the rear end and I didnt think to check for clearance...my bad. I cant see a 3" set of tail pipes clearing but maybe they would. I would much rather have 3" than 2.5".

thanks for the info, so for the OP. get the buickgn.com exhaust but stay away from the hr bar ;)

I think Ill you tube some exhaust clips and maybe that will give some info on sound. I like the stuff hooker makes its good quality. I have heard the atr and the pypes system as well. Im def wanting it quiet though, better to sneak up on prey haha.

hooker and quality hahaha. want a set of hooker headers?

I have had a number of different exhausts on Turbo Regals over the years to share with you. The dual exhaust from Kenne-Bell (drone), 3" system from ATR (double drone), the MagnaFlow dual system from Full Throttle (double drone). The Hooker system has minimal to no drone at any rpm. Others have complained that it rusts but I'm betting those are cars that got driven for a lot of short trips where the moisture didn't get totally burn off as my system is still fine after 5 years. For me a perfect system would be the Hooker in stainless. Hope this helps. And the Hooker was the cheapest cost of all the ones I have used.

Hey thanks Dean, I think that seals the deal. I dont want it droning and I would like it moderately quiet. I much prefer the quite whoosh over a droning exhaust. Was it a bolt on deal with dual tail pipes? Did it mount in the stock location?

I have a Pypes System on mine and I love it!

If you don't like drone, the. ONLY way to eliminate all the drone is with the three muffler system. I have tried almost every type of muffler and system out there and the only way I have found to eliminate the low /cruise RPM drone is with the cross flow muffler installed in the stock muffler location. For those that say that brand XYZ doesn't drone.................you have never driven a Turbo Buick tht doesn't really drone.

Yeah I would be inclined to agree. When all I fooled with was mustangs the first thing I would do is the exhaust. Then I noticed that the stock mufflers were two different sizes. Then I dawned on me that the purpose of that was to eliminate or reduce drone. I would prefer a transverse/stock type mounting to help retain my ground clearance but ultimately to not have it super noisy in the car. Kevins also mentioned the three muffler system, thats something I may look into as well as the hooker catback.
