internet explorer help

Any time I try to open a new tab on my computer, it completely closes out that window. It used to work but now it doesn't. Any ideas as to what is going on?

Which version of IE? 7 or 8? What happens when you are on your home page and hit ctrl and t at the same time? You could just use firefox for most things.
