I was looking at Full Throttle's website, wondering how important is it for the chip to read past 255 g/sec.? My car is an 87 TR that is pretty much stock. I have a stock turbo and injectors. I have an LT-1 MAF and translator. I plan on installing a 3" downpipe and I have a stretched intercooler (with dut neck). I currently have the stock chip, so I guess my main question is should I go with extender or Turbo Tweek? Thanks.

Stock injectors it's a tossup, either one will work fine, I'd get the extender for larger injectors and more MAF airflow should that happen in the future.

For now go with price or programmable options you might like for each chip.

Making sure the translator has the latest/greatest software is also a good idea.

You will most likely get sucked into the endless desire for bigger, better, faster so go ahead and buy the chip. I ended up with the Extender G chip and Gen2 translator. The G chip lets me be change an array of settings in the translator. The Extender chip also offers some unique settings that other "burnt" chips can't. My opinion only of course. I have a 60lb Joe Lubrant chip for 93 octane if you are interested for $35.00 shipped.

I would advise a turbotweak chip. The last I heard the extender didn't give near the adjustablity the TT chip does. Things may have changed, but I've also had fantastic results with TT chips and the customer service is awesome. I'm not saying fullthrottles isn't. I know it is. I'm just giving you my experience. james

I think you're mis informed, about the features and adjustability that is.

Not saying TT isn't a bad chip, I'm pretty sure they're every bit as good as everyone says, but feature for feature I personally prefer the Extender series.

Used in conjunction with the translator there's not much that the extender seris can't do.

And the ability to meter air/fuel accurately beyond the 255 point and tune the system with the extender/translator is the best reason for running them! Along with all the other features of course.

Like I said, I've been wrong before. I know I get +/- 9 degrees (18 total) of timing adjustability for 1/2 and 3/4 along with +/- %20 overall WOT fuel (%40 total) and the same for fuel independently for first. Also, my understanding is that both lock the fuel for WOT fuel. Again, I could be mistaken and I don't know the adjustability of the extender. (last I checked is wasn't that much but things change :)) PLEASE, correct me if I'm wrong. I hate not knowing and recognize that I am far from a chip expert. :) Maybe when I get the wrinkles out of the new combo I'll give an extender chip a try. I would be interested in seeing how the extended maf readings effect part (and full if it applies) throttle performance. james

I read some where on here or there, (when i find it I will post it) Eric /TT was contracted by Full throttle to do the Extender Chips.

I really don't have any experience with the Extender chips but I have a TT chip and love it. I bought the WE4 I currently have as a 13 second car with a rod knock(long story). I built a motor for it and completely changed the combo. I changed basiclly everything--motor, cam, heads, turbo, injectors, converter etc. all the same time. I bought a TT chip and took the car to the track and it ran 10.90's on drag radials on the first trip with no tuning required in the chip. My set up is pretty mild as far as 10 second cars go-I have a 208/208 flat tappet cam, ported irons with stock valves, stock unported intake, stock TB and 15 row stretch(at the time) and a stock MAF. My point is that the TT chip let my car to its potential the first time out. I am not saying anything negative about the Extender at all because like I said I have no experience with it, but I like my TT chip so much its hard for me to imagine that anything will improve on it.

Depends on what you mean by "lock the fuel at WOT"? The key is, being able to measure airflow beyond 255. The extenders take that capability to 512, and in the extender extreme/extreme G/Pro they can measure upwards of 768 gps of air (for the high flow engines).
of course the blm's are locked to 128 at WOT, maintaining stability, but allowing the operator to fine tune the fuel delivery based on sensor inputs, and because air is being properly metered (and not guessed at), fuel delivery will be stable and remain adjustable.

Heck, even my bone stock long block can flow over 360gps of air at full boogey and approaches 400gps when I really crank the boost up.

Since then however, I've moved up to the Translator Pro and Extender Pro so I could get the MAF out of the airflow (and yes, the butt dyno has convinced me that even the big maf was a bit of a restriction) and move to speed density tuning, while still maintaining all the other neat features of the extender in the stock ecm (the best of both worlds).

Amusing some of the stuff that floats around the internet. :(

Common sense would tell you that if TT was doing extenders that the TT chips would have the "extension" ability (which of course they don't)

Bob is "the" extender man/engineer/guru/genius.

I see. So even though the ECM isn't using the maf readings at wot to compute fueling it gives you one more point of reference along with (I would guess) having the ability to use that reading for part throttle driving? I could see an advantage to that. Or does the engine still use the maf readings at WOT even though the blm's are locked? That would be even cooler. Also, what kind of fuel/timing adjustments to you get? I know the trans and trans+ give you some but doesn't the chip have some as well? Sorry for my ignorance about the extenders and thanks for the info. james

Yes, the maf readings are still being used, that's the beauty of "extending" them.
I'd have to look into my documentation when I get off work, but with the new GEN II translator, and Translator Pro, the timing and fuel adjustments are far more than would/could be used in normal circumstances. The chip and translators both have a set of adjustments.

Well, if the readings are being used at WOT then after I tune my new setup with the TT chip I think I will try an extender and see which one I like better. Thanks for the info. james

Thanks for the offer but I don't need the 60 lb chip right now. I have a GN with go fast parts on it to satisfy my desire to go fast. I was trying to keep my TR basically stock and didn't want to spend a lot of money on it. Stock turbo and stock injectors both have low miles on them. However, a downpipe never hurt anybody, right? So after the downpipe, I thought a chip would be in order. I already have a TT chip for my GN and it works fine. Just wanted to know the benefits of the extender chip over TT, given that I have a translator. This thread is interesting- keep the info coming!

My o2

I have tried both the TT and extender chips and they are both great chips with user adjustable functions. The extender chips have a few more features like lean cruise, shift light and spool fuel to name a few. Now I'm using the Tpro with the Extender Pro chip. I have fuel, spark and boost adjustment right at my finger tips and I don't even need a laptop.

I have had both, they are both GREAT! Both guys know there stuff. I run Bob's chips because I like the able to read past 255gps.

In a nutshell, what the extended WOT MAF range gives you is a setup that will adjust fuel to accommodate changes in boost.

So, it you have your tune right at 18 psi, and you turn it up to 21, the chip will deliver more fuel because it reads the additional airflow.

To me, these chips are worth the cost.
I used another vendors chips up until 8-9 years ago....
Now, only Extenders in my cars. The idle, driveability, and ETs` have always made me a satisfied user.
