Is is wise to overfill a 2004R?

I have read where some recomend overfilling a 2004R by one qt. Some say this will keep the pan full and stop cavition.? Is this true and a comon practice?

Common practise?... well some might say yeah, but it is not the wises thing to do for there maybe a undesired side affect of venting tranny fluid out the vent tube and onto the ground and under the tires.... not a good thing. It is usually done to determine if the pump is sucking air (cavitation) and if overfilling does correct the prob then you should consider a deeper pan/filter set-up to correct the prob the right way.

I wonder if having a extra qt. of fluid in my trans. would have keep it from slipping.? It is killed now, I was just wondering.

In some transmissions it's a must have.

For example front wheel drive ford taurus from 87 on up if you take a hard right turn at a good speed, the trans has a tendency to neutral out for a second {because the fluid is going away from the filter } and then slam back in.

1 qt over on your trans isn't going to cause any harm. It won't totally correct a 200-4r cavitation, but it's better than nothing.


I agree with hottogo that a deeper pan {PTS} will correct the concern.

The way I understand is that when you over fill the trans 1 qt Its good helping prevent sucking air on hard launches. But can be bad because the fluid is higher up into the pick up tube and the rotating assembly which can aerate and foam the fluid. I thinks its best to go to a deeper pan with a longer pick up tube, which adds capacity while keeping the fluid below the rotaing assembly

i run a pts pan with filter at the back and still run a qt over


if i remember correctly on testing even 3 qts over full the stock pan filter have been known to suck air on a hard launch
