How did your compy get struck by lightning? Standing too close to a tall metal rod?

I left it plugged into the surge protector and it got a surge I guess. I should have unplugged it.

Good choice. Consider this a disposable computer, when if fails beyond repair you won't be mad at yourself for spending $1000+ on something that wouldn't have lasted any longer. It's really a gateway under the eMachine badging.

Thanks! I'll try it. I had Kaspersky virus protection on my old computer. Best Buy sells a box of some sort that plugs into my new computer with a USB cable. Then I would remove the old hard drive and install it into the box. Then, if the hard drive spins, I can load everything like pictures and old emails into the new computer. Has anybody tried this?

Looks like you got a good one, too. I didn't look at the box at Best Buy. I was talking with the Geeky guy and he said for $100 he could transfer the info from my old hard drive to the new one. In the spirit of we Buick "do it yourselfers no matter what the outcome" I asked if I could do it myself. That is when he explained about the box that I would have to buy for $50. All I know is that they carry it at Best Buy. If you go this route let us know how it turns out. He said if the hard drive doesn't spin then it won't work. I assume you could return the box in that case- actually you could probably use it once and then return it anyway
