My plans for spring were to add a roller cam and some ported irons....well,I got the heads but came up short on the roller set-up for now.
Question is,is there a performance gain just swapping to ported heads with the stock cam and intake?I usually run around 26lbs of boost so I would assume it wouldnt hurt...but would the gain be just a few hp or could it add maybe in the neighborhood of 30-40?

Sorry I meant to keep typing and say that most have said you will see some gains from heads alone but the bigger gain is from the heads and cam togather.

Porting IS better!

Horsepower is all about air flow. :)

At 25 psi, the heads being ported will give way more HP gain than a cam.

A roller cam will help if you raise the RPM level, but many stock cams [and heads] have been into the 10's with just better valve springs.

Cam changes are "overrated" in a stock turbo engine! :D

We did this test years ago. Added ported heads and intake to a stock short block (yes stock cam). The car picked up 7mph in the 1/4 with just those two changes. Go with it and have fun.

See ya, Kip

Ported heads will add over 100hp if the fuel is there. A car Otto dynoed 2 weeks ago picked up over 120whp with heads cam and intake and the boost was 5psi less. The turbo was a 6262.

Wow, good info. Thanks. Probably my next upgrade next winter. Dollar for dollar, that has to be one of the better returns for the investment.

it surely is. No tuning variable once they are on and you will be able to get more air mass through the engine without increasing boost.

Hey Bison, what was the total HP of the engine tested with the 6262?

What was the cam choice? i could probably stuff another flat tappet in it for low cost while it is apart and pick up a used 61 or bigger turbo.
