Just purchased a 1981 Indy 500 pace car

Just got back from vacation and decided to do some work under the hood, git the right fenderwell cleaned up and rerouted some of the wiring. Still need to clean up the ac comp, trans cooling lines and some other items. Also removed the overspray off the blue steering column collar. I ordered a carb kit for the Dualjet and hoping to have that in a few days so I can clean it up and install new gaskets and whatever else it may need. Planning on being done completely under the hood this weekend until I get the motor back. Also It appears the heater valve has been changed out at some point to the black plastic one. Going to get a ac Delco one since they still make the original style and they aren’t too expensive for the correct piece

Taped up the taillights and resprayed the chrome outline I think they came out very nice. I used a rustoleum chrome metallic paint. I’ve used it before on similar things and haven’t had any issues with it. Lays down nice and blends in well if you need to do a touch up

Got some more parts and brackets removed and ready for cleaning. Got the manifolds and crossover pipe off the donor engine without having any bolts break off into the manifolds which is awesome as I hate drilling out broken bolts. Got the brakes bled this evening as my wife finally helped me with that. Also got the original exhaust off the car to make way for the new pypes dual exhaust system. Going to go by the machine shop tomorrow and see how we’re looking as I haven’t been by there in a couple weeks due to me being on vacation. Hoping he is about done with the engine so I can get it back and get it prepped for some corporate blue paint and start reinstalling parts. Ready to see a engine back in this engine bay. I plan on ordering the GTA wheels probably in the middle of August along with the center caps and lug nuts. Then all that will need to be ordered is the exhaust.

Maybe I’ll have the engine back by the end of August... went by Friday and it looked to be next in line to get bored. Crank is back from having the work done on it. Just a waiting game right now. I did order a brand new set of lug nuts and lug nut covers for the gta wheels. I also ordered a new output shaft seal for the trans as it looks leaky. I received the test pipe a few days ago with the 4 bolt flange for the new pypes exhaust. Still need to get a new hanger for the 4 bolt style flange.

Did some work on the car this evening. Dropped the trans pan, cleaned, installed new gasket and filter, installed new output shaft seal, pressure washed a couple parts so I can get them painted. Haven’t gotten my email from Kirban on the exhaust tracking info so going to assume it hasn’t shipped yet

One more piece to the puzzle showed up today

You are doing a very nice job..keep the photos coming as a lot of people are watching and commenting on your build!!

I know this doesn’t help the car run or drive but it’s a little detail the car needed. I ordered a new set of GM keys and had them cut. Much better compared to the generic locksmith keys

After breakfast I got busy working on cleaning and painting some more parts. But the power steering/ smog pump bracket I decided to modify I have three of these brackets and the original Indy one is put away so with one of the spares I decided to cut the ears off that hold the smog pump as I’m not going to use it on the car right now, after cutting and grinding I hit it with some fresh black paint. I think once I get my welder I’m going to tack on a flat piece of metal to cover the rectangle hole at the top of the bracket but for now it is good enough to use and looks presentable.

It’s coming back to life the new exhaust showed up today. So I got it installed loosely for now but wanted to put it back on the ground to make sure it’s not rubbing on anything. This is the first time it’s been outside in several months.
