I'm sure this has been covered, but there are new tires out there and I was wondering which slick worked for you guys at the track.
I'm using M/t ET Drag 26 x 10 x 15 and had trouble the first 10 feet or so with spinning. One time it was 1.77 then 2.25 then 2.0 then 2.2 etc. Same type of burn out good and hot each time. Should I switch to a 28 inch tall tire?

thanks,
Marty

MT 28x9 fits inside the wheel well with no problem maybe a 28x 10 will also work.

29X9 will fit with a rolled fender lip. 30x9 will not fit in my car, but I've heard that some can get away with that size.

Before you trash the 26x10's, what pressure were you running and what width wheel? Was anybody pulling good 60's? The track might just have been crappy that day.......street tires really screw up the racing surface.

Dave,
I was running 15 psi in tires on 8 inch rims. Good point on track condition found out today that the left side that I was running had problems. I will try the 26 x 10 again but when it's time to replace will probably try 28 x 9's.

Thanks to all others that reply, need to know how big a tire and which brand fits best. All manufacturers sizes are not the same even though they are designated that way.

Thanks all,

Marty

How Much Pressure Should I Run In Slicks?

What is a good range on tire pressure in slicks that are 26x10 or 28x10?

I'd say 15 psi is WAY too much pressure. I've been running my 29x9 Hoosiers on an 8" rim at 11.5psi and that where they seem to work the best. I tried Goodyears (same size) and they sucked. 28x9's are a good choice an they should pick up your MPH.

Dave

Dave,
Thanks I'll try less pressure first, but will probably get the taller tire. Our track prep here sucks.

Thanks,

Marty

The largest tire and rim may depend on how agressive you want to go on the install. Heres the list of tricks that I used to stuff 275-60-15 BFG DRs under my lowered (one inch) GN with 8" rims on a 4" back space. Looks great and no rubbing.

*Boxed LCAs (helps stiffen rear end movement).
*Adj UCAs (to center dif from left to right. Most are not centered).
*Air bags (Keeps from bottoming out. 8 psi left 12 psi rt).
*Grind or roll fender lip.
*Good shocks
*Notch frame if needed (I did'nt need to).
*Get a skinnier girl friend (If needed :p ).

Good luck...

Do you have an open diff or are you towing a trailer at the track? You should be able to get better than that with the stock wheels and tires. 2.0-2.5 60' . Keep trying.

I was blowing the tires (but bigger slicks), my answer was a larger A/R turbine housing. Cheap to swap. Mo'top end power, little slower spool-up. Cheaper and easier to change than new shoes. Just another thing to play with.

SPOOLFOOL2,
My wife doesn't like the car anyhow, so I'll get a skinny girlfriend. Keep it between us.
Have- boxed LCA's, air bags, good shocks. But might get adj. pper LCA's.

Thanks,
Marty

turbo2nr,
You'r right, I got the same times with my street tires. Skating on ice. Yes it has a posi, didn't pull just sat there.
In truth when it hooked one time it did a 1.77. The track wasn't good but I probably over boosted at the start line, my friend told me I broke the tires the first 10 feet or so. Also the slicks have very little use on them but they have been sitting in the attic for 2 years until now. And yes I did tow a trailer with the car, was I supposed to put the car on the trailer? ;)
Happy thanksgiving,

Marty

I Like Keeping My Wheelwells Stock With Traction!!!!!!!

In the stock wheelwell I have used 28 by 10 Goodyear slicks on 15 by 7 prostars with 13 to 15 lbs. of air (no rubbing) one air bag set at 30 psi and on a 4 lb. foot brake launch and 23 lbs. of boost put down a 1.49 60 ft. with no hint of spin and 130+ mph in the 1/4; WAY BACK in the year 2000 on the oem 109 block and computer, etc. to this day daily driven street car. :D :)
PS: I may try 29 by 9's on my next pair of slicks on the 15 by 7's with 3 1/2" backspacing Prostars. :D

On the street I run 295/50 15's, approx. 26" tall and 9 1/2 to 10"s wide (Pepboy tires= Coopers) on the 15 by 7's Prostars with no rubs and no air in the air bags and I know you don't want to know my average 60 fts with these.

I like my 26x10 ET drags, no fitment issues and I've been in the 1.50's in the 60ft , I usually run 10 or 11 psi with rolled fender lips and air bags.

Why are you using only 7" wide rims in the back????

Any idea what the total sectional width of those goodyear slicks are and what compound were they?

295x50x15 should be alot taller than 26"-275x50x15 is ussually like 26"- the 295 should be atleast a 27" tire.

BF Goodrich's rule of thumb a long time ago was that the rim should be 70% as wide as the "tread width", so 10"s of tread means you can get away with 7" wide rims (stock width) which has worked for me just fine, and it will make the sectional width less which may be the little bit that is needed so the tire will not rub in stock wheelwells; also due to the more narrow rims I use less air pressure to get a flat foot print.

If you measure 295/50 by 15's (pepboys tires) with a rule, they are only slightly over 26"s tall. That is what I go by and not what is listed.

I think the Goodyear 28" by 10" wide slicks (12.2" section width, not sure) only come in one compound, at least when I bought my last set. I have heard good things about the stiff sidewall MT slicks.

I would have answered sooner but for some reason I am never notified by e-mail about threads I have posted to, maybe someone will straighten that out. :D

I was thinking about something larger than 275/60s but considering someone ran 7s on a 275/60 drag radial I think it's enough for me.

I personally like my rim size to be as close to the thread size as possible- to have as much rim support under the full thread so it doesnt get distorted or wear out irregularly.you still have plenty of sidewall beyond the width of the rim.

my old combination

The launch I attached the picture of is with the following combination:
) Tires: Hoosier Quick time pros, 27 x 11.50 on 15x8 wheels (3.5 back spacing), with 12 or 11 lbs of air pressure.
) 10 - 12 lbs of boost on take off.
) 3500 RPM’s
) 25 lbs. air pressure in the right rear bag.
) A pinion snubber from Postons.
) All stock suspension except for the Hotchkis rear lowering springs, and bell tech drop spindles up front, with completion engineering 90/10 shocks. Also no front sway bar
) All the rear brake tricks.

60-foot times with this combination consistently in the low 1.7 to high 1.6 zone

Switched to a 28 x 10.50 D05 compound Hoosier slick, and the 60-foot times dropped into the low 1.6 to high 1.5 zone, and the MPH also picked up. Plus the car was less squirmish because I was able to run more air pressure in the tires. 1.59 60 foot times were all done on 15-PSI air pressure.

Either tire fit very well on this 8” wide rim. And they tucked up into the wheel well just fine even with the car being lowered 2 inches.

Oh yeah I am sure you already know this, but I am going to say it anyway because I see people at the racetrack do it all the time. Pull up to the water box do a big smoky burnout roast the life out of their treaded tires while sitting in the water box, then let off the throttle while still sitting in the water box, then slowly pull out of the water box while their treaded tires gather water up in them, drip some of it off while pulling up to the starting line, water still collected in-between the tread, light turns green they launch and have an enormous amount of wheel spin.

Sorry to ramble on.
