The choice you're got to make is:

Which one of the lock-up converters best fit your budget?

When you've made that decision, call the manufacturer/supplier and fill them in on your combination to get their recommendation regarding which of their converters & stall speeds they feel best suited to your car/motor. Some will also provide a re-stall within a year to dial it in even more on the money.

Many suffer from too much stall speed rather than too little.

HTH :)

i see why this is a big debate:D and i am taking this in on both sides i guess i was hoping for an overwhelming opinion on this t/c issue i see the logic in both sides.i also saw the debate in old posts about percentages of slip on the non lock ups and lost mph this is obviously a confusing issue .i am thankful for your guys time and input.;) and anymore inputs will be appreciated;)

TWO LANE I SEE YOU SAID DECISION IS TO WICH LOCK UP TO USE NOTHING ABOUT NON LOCK:D I GUESS I FIGURE I WILL GET BETTER INFO UP FRONT FROM YOU GUYS THAT HAVE HAD THE EXPERIENCE AS OPPOSED TO THE T/C MANUFACTURER WHO IS TRYING TO SELL ME THEIR PRODUCT.I FEEL LIKE ANY THING IN LIFE EXPERIENCE IS THE BEST TOOL .I DO NOT HAVE IT SO I AM LOOKING TO THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE BEEN THERE ! THANKS:)

Ahh, but the 9" NL will make you faster! I saw a 4 tenth in the 1/4 improvement over the stock converter by just going to an Art Carr 9" and shift kit. Bone stock car with open dump, 26X8.5" slicks, performance chip, and boost at 22psi. Car was all stock except for above. My ET went from 13.0 to 12.60 at 108MPH. I believe you will see 3-4 tenths over a stock converter at any performance level!

Yes, you will see a higher MPH with a lock-up. You will also see 3-4 tenths with a higher stall lock-up as well. BUT I just don't buy the theory that there is nothing to be gained by scrapping that D5. 4 tenths for $600.00 seems like a good buy to me! If you plan on frequent visits to the drag strip, it won't be long before that D5 baloons and takes your trans with it like mine did last season in my new GN:rolleyes:

BTW, ET wins races! MPH is icing on the cake!

Using your logic my car would run 11 teens with unported heads, a TA49, Bluetops at 23 psi of boost. That would have to be some kind of world record. If you were only running 13.0's at 22 psi of boost, I wouldn't blame the D5, unless it was defective.

The original stock D5 is less likely to balloon than a converter that has been monkeyed with. If I had to guess, I would say your converter had been monkeyed with.

I doubt it was monkeyed with since my first GN suffered the same fate. I bought the car new in 87 and stock TC took out the front pump within a year! My current GN has 21K orig miles and stock TC took a crapper on it's first 11 second pass! I knew the day would come, just not as quickly as it did!

BTW, a mid 12 second run back in 1987 was a good running GN considering the best chip available was the Hypertech Stage 3! The car was showroom stock except for the mods listed in my previous post. I guess I just don't have any luck with the stock TC's.

I will be getting my trans done in a week or 2 and it will be getting an Art Carr NL! I can't wait to keep my foot planted for the whole 1320 for the first time with my current combo.

Oh yes, don't knock it till you try it;) Those 11 oh's may just be a converter away!LOL

HTH You're welcome! :)

I have used the POC D5 for years...(1986) ...drive around with the LU switch at arm's length  we have 5 of the cars we DRIVE not counting another 5-10 others we have had along the way..(hey I get bored easy).. never had a D5 balloon. BUT like I said these are only mid 11 car's (stocker's = beater's ) an ya they DO MPH..115-121 on drag radials.
I dont understand why everyone NEEDs a converter in a 13 or 12 sec car. must be old age I guess.. now lemme get my NEW Cobra an have some fun with some of these Buicks :p
