I have noticed more than one occasion that some shops or people install non lockup converter with lock up trans. I don’t know if that has to with lack of knowledge or something else. Now I have no experience working on a transmission or how it really works but I have noticed this more than few times. When I took the numbers of the converter and called Precision, they told me the numbers indicate that it is a non lockup converter but when I look at the tranny, the ball and the O ring is still in place at the tip of strator or whatever it's called. I have not looked inside of the tranny to confirm anything else. Am I missing anything?

My question is; is it ok to run a non lockup converter to run with a lockup trans or is it even possible or vise versa?
The problem is; I have no history on these cars, I buy them from insurance auctions, repos, junk yards or the guys that I buy from have no idea what’s in it.

TIA

If you install a lock up converter on a trans with a non lock up valve in the pump it'll stall when you put it in gear. There is no oil flow to hold the clutch off.

Now if you install a Non-lock converter on Trans that has the Lock up stuff there... I dont know what happens.

call Jimmy. He explained it to me once but I can't remember sh!t...

I was told the same thing; I did talk to Jimmy as well as Dean from DRC. What gets me is that why bother removing the O ring and the ball for a non lockup setup then? So I was wondering if there is going to be any consequences.

I have looked at this same issue. I just went by what all the guru's had recommended years ago which is remove the check ball. But........when you look at where the fluid exits the converter it's got nothing to do with the check ball. It exits the converter between the input shaft and stator support tube. As long as the trans has the non lock valve installed I'm not sure the check ball is an issue. Maybe a trans expert can chime in.
