Looking for a Boat, need advice.

Guys I have never owned a boat, but we go to the lake a bunch and usually rent Jet Ski's and or a boat.

Yesterday we saw a Larsen 1850 with the 4.3 V-6 190 hp and it looked like a really nice boat. They were asking $21,500,

What do you guys recommend? We just will be doing family boating, tubing, skiing, etc. Not a lot of fishing.

Having lived on the water, been a boater my entire life, I would advise that there are much less things to break/go wrong with a straight inboard boat vs. a I/O.... no tilt/trim issues, waterpumps that are a bitch to change (have to drop the lower unit), multiple 90 deg. gear sets, dog clutches, momentary engine interrupters for shifting, etc.... just a simple wet clutch/in/out/reverser trans, shaft, and rudder..... there are alot of models out there now that are a great compromise between all-out tournament skier and family cruiser.... MasterCraft, Nautique, Ski Supreme, Centurian, Malibu, Supra, Moomba, Tige, etc, etc... and they all hold their value MUCH better than any of the I/O's.... and can be had in your apparent price range... Much better low speed handling w/ an inboard also....

My '87 MasterCraft ProStar 190 is probably worth more than my Buick...

Ty if you take it on choppy water make sure you have a bigger boat 21' at least, if not its really annoying when your getting tossed around like a rag doll, and if anyone has a bad back you'll never enjoy it, and you'll hear "My back hurts, go slower" . Get a 350 in it too

Aint that the truth.You think Buicks cost money.A boat is a hole in the water that you dump money into. Shop around and get the best warranty.My friend and I were out on lake Michigan on his 25ft baja and the hull cracked .I believe the hull had a ten year warranty.They replaced his hull.

Nailed that on the head! Like everyone else has said get a brand new one with a good warranty. Sell it before warranty is over and plan on losing a bunch of money. But its well worth it if you have a family and want to have good times together. Thats what it all boils down too.Priceless!!

I totally disagree.... let someone else take the depreciation hit.... buy a QUALITY used inboard that never breaks, use it for years and years with simple maintenance, and sell it for nearly what u paid....

Perhaps you haven't priced new vs. used boats lately? A brand new fairly low level MasterCraft is around $80k, yet a gently used 04 ish model with 2-300 hours can be had for ~$25-30k.... and likely will sell for about the same 8-10 years from now.... just sayin'....:wink:

Ty, anything smaller than 21 you will wish you stayed on land. When the wind somes up or a bigger lake with traffic, you will want it bad. There are a lot of boats with very little time for sale. As stated above let some one else take the hit and steal a good one......
