My wife might be getting a transfer to Hawaii and I want to bring the t-type. I need some feedback about hawaii. Are the smog checks in Hawaii like california? Is rust a problem? Anything you guys can tell me would be great.

'86 T-Type: no mods except Red's xp pump...someday will have all the goodies!

No smog checks here. The DMV is more screwed up here than ANY other state I've been in (but then again this state's gov't is BY FAR the most corrupt that I've seen, even worse than NY). Don't bother registering the car there in CA before you come here, because this state feels "SPECIAL" and don't allow out of state plates unless you pay them another $15 and put an ugly blue sticker on your bumper. But there are more TR's per area here than any place else I've been. People say that rust is a problem, and I understand why, but I haven't seen it at all on any of my vehicles. Which island are you going to? The track here on Oahu is the best I've seen for just going and making passes. Only $6 to run al night, open year round, and never more than 10 minutes in the staging lanes (usually just drive right up).

What Taz say about the DVM is true. But as for the rust, as you live closer to the shore line rust becomes a factor. The rust on our TR's is in the usual places.

Hey Derrick where is this track that you race at??? :D

Will you be making some passes anytime soon? ;)

Just as soon as ATR gets off their A$$E$ and sends me my new rockers to replace the broken ones. But yes, I have the car running pretty good except now I have a new toy to play with and tune... The Alcohol!! My car I decided if I can have alcohol while working on the car, the car can have alcohol while it moves my big a$$ around. :)

But yeah, I know. It's been WAYYYY too long since I've had the car at the track. Damn, I've gone through about 2 different combos now without the car making a pass.:(

Derrick

P.S. My slicks have spider webs on them it's been so long.

I don't think the rust here is necessarilly any worse than any other ocean side city like San Diego... just need to care for the car, which I'm sure you do.

I'm originally from California and almost moved back this year. I was very concerned about bringing my T-Type to Cali because I don't even have a cat-converter. In other words: don't sweat a smog check.

The only thing we have outside of your normal registration is a "safety check." This consists of some gas station monkey making sure all your lights, horn, etc. works, and it gives him an excuse to take our cars for a spin around the block. The other requirement, which I believe is fairly common practice, is mandatory insurance coverage.
