As many of you know I got my son a KX85 for Christmas and I have fell just as hard as he has:D

I have another bike on the way back from TN right now!

Need some help on setups but I can't believe the LIMITED amount of info on the net! I figure one of two things, either I am not looking in the right places ( my guess) or people are tight lipped....

I am used to coming here and finding out anything on TR's so I am spoiled:p

I know some of you guys have had kids race or raced yourself in this century, I raced but back in the 80s!

I am looking advice on jetting, gearing, and suspension!

unfortunately its just gonna take time to see what your son and the bike both like, with two strokes the leaner the better, your just gonna have to read plugs, everything affects it, like what reeds, exhaust condition of the engine, so every bike is gonna be a little different

never really seen need for gearing change with bikes that small, but it would depend on track, fast tracks, long straits, sweeping turns vs technical tracks, short straights, tight turns

for suspension i would start off setting preload (link below) and then find out how many clicks each adjuster has front and rear (count them out and set in middle and record/keep track) the send him out to run a few laps and then adjust lets say the front compression dampening in half again (if 12 total it should be set at 6 (middle) set to 9 or 3) and send him back out for a few laps and see if its better or worse, if better adjust 2 clicks in direction of your choice and then back out for more laps and check better or worse and start to adjust by one click at a time until happy. once he's happy with that setting work on the front rebound dampening same procedure, then to the rear same procedure, and then you'll probably have to go back to the front to fine tune.

I would also install an oring on the tube where the seal slides, or you can use a zip tie, so you can see what's happening. I had a rider that complained that the suspension on the front was bottoming out, when in fact it was just to stiff, and the zip tie showed it, zip tie only moved 1.5" out of 5" travel. keep a log as different tracks like different suspension setting

i know it's not what your looking for but hope it helps

Thanks
Dave

lol i didnt even fully read the link i posted, just googled and picked one that showed how to set preload, just went to see if there was any other useful info on there and saw a few things i mentioned above lol

shave the head to raise the compression.bore the carb, run race fuel, most riders cant use all of the factory suspension.they can soak up some shat. maybe a pipe and silencer my 2 cents. have fun:D

Shane,

Look into this suspension guy named "Litz" he done the suspension on my sons CR85R and it was great!

As far as the jetting goes we had a neighbor jet his bike who happened to work for a power sports shop... His bike ran on 110 only and it was Crazy Fast!

I play with bikes all the time. Go to allthingsmoto.com
YouTube can show you how to set sag and tune carbs.
Currently own a 07 CR125 and have had almost every bike but the euro bikes.
I try to go on the cheap and keep it simple. Rebuilds and parts are cheap for 2strokes. Had a few 4 strokes and they are way too expensive. I'm sure the cost will come down in the future tho.

Yea, I am trying to stay 2 stroke as long as possible. The new thing in mini's is the Honda CRF150F, if you ride those things hard the maintenance is killer! My son started off wanting one of those, I said I tell you what bubba, you start winning races or a championship and I will buy you one! Got to crawl before you walk!

my 12 year old nephew races a Kawi 85 (i don't know the model numbers and stuff.. not a motocross guy.. i just know it's a year old, green, and 85cc)..
he runs it bone stock with nothing more than adjusting the rear coilover for different track conditions and wins races with it..

Called Pro Circuit and Factory Connection today... Pro Circuit customer service seemed to bite ass and the guy from Factory Connection was super nice so guess where it is going:D

The suspension on these bikes need new fluids and at times revalving, they give you a lifetime discount on future freshen ups so can't go wrong IMO....

Usta race when I was 11-14. Best times of my life. Just me and my old man. I usta race BMX on Friday night and Saturday and Race motocross at Englishtown on Sundays. Needless to say I was number 1 in te state for 11yr old in BMX. And had a few first places on Sundays. Usta have a full gate of 40 riders. Definetly something ill never forget. Just cost way to much money for my parents. I suggest you start training your son. Cardio cardio cardio. Push ups out the wazoo. Because arm pump was the hardest for me to overcome.

Yep, arm pump is a key! He has already learned that. He is jogging and bicycle riding for training! I am proud of him!

Good stuff. The bonding time together will be most memorable. Rebuilding the top end in my basement at 11pm in my basement after practice. Should maybe see if BMX is Somthing he might be interested in. I feel it helped me tremendously
