I was one of the people who bought a new module from the guy on Ebay asking $99. I offered $50 (someone here said they'd done that and got one for $50.) and he accepted my $50 plus $9 shipping.

I received it today ... it has the correct part number stamped on the inside filler but the body of it is silver (bare metal) colored. I checked my many modules, some with coils on them, and they're all black.

Even though he advertised OEM I'm starting to wonder if the one I got is some funky aftermarket piece.

Anyone know if GM ever made OEM modules which are NOT black?

Thanks.

I believe that all are coming silver now. I bought some new ones several months bach and they all came that way, 1 from kirban's & 2 from Gyrhead.
I think that a while back, GM changed their manufacturing location or their point of purchase from US or Canada to somewhere else. Like far east. They definitely do work though. Mine were somewhat more than $ 50 though. HTH

I too have one coming from the ebay guy..Cost me 65 plus shipping.. He told me in email that it would be the "silver" version. I asked a buddy of mine who recently paid a BUNDLE from GM and his is silver too...

Yes they are bare metal...I have 2 new ones I bought from a GM dealer years ago...

Yep they are bare metal. Let us know what type of package they come in. If its OEM than it should have a Delco logo or trademark on the label at least. No package than I would question what they mean by OEM. Watch out. A favorite trick of the Brand-X guys is to use packaging that looks simuliar to OEM. Right down to using the same part numbers.

Thanks gentlemen, that's good to hear.

As for the packaging, that was another concern. Plain white box. No numbers, no GM logo. Inside just packing material and a shrink wrapped module.

Here's a pic of box and module and a closeup of the number.

Was that the new part? It looks king of old IMO. Anyway the number on it is an old GM part number so I'd say that is a GM part.

You know I've heard of companies that make parts for GM finding creative ways of selling the blems and other sub-standard parts. I wonder if thats why the box is a plain brown wrapper?

I think you're right. The description on Ebay mentions small imperfections.

I guess the only thing remaining is to actually test it on a car.

Hi Chris! The newest Delcos' are unpainted, but the potting substance is cream beige to tan in color. I notice yours appears to be light green. The acid test, as with all ignition modules, is if it works without a glitch at WOT. If it does, you're in the PINK.

Hi Chris, Ron here, I have a new one one in the unopened AC Delco box, If you want I could open it and take a look at it, but once she's opened its mine, I been trying to sell but no takers, so I will just hang onto it for a spare, part number is 24503624.

Ron

Mine has the old part number on it. Yet has the newer plain metal case, as people have pointed out. So damned if I know what it is....lol.

I had an old Wells one sitting new in the box for years on my shelf. During one of my "cleanup" moods I threw it out and now I wish I had saved it for comparison.

Yep John, I'll have to test it on a car.

Ron, thanks but you don't have to open yours.

Got mine today.. The "goo" is black and has 9440 stamped and under it, USA 7DD.. Only other markings is on underside says Made in USA...

Just got off the phone with a Standard rep. Turns out mine is the real deal from them :) Amazing how many companies they "own" or manufacture for..

I just went out to the shop and connected a brand new in the box coilpak to the module then attached Casper's coil/ module tester. It tested perfectly. In fact the jumping spark is VERY yellow and "thick" looking as compared to an old coilpak/module I have on my shelf which I tested immediately afterwards.

So until I get it onto an engine for the definitive test I'm happy.

GOOD idea !! Have to get ahold of a tester..Running TypeII w/Meth. coils for now...

Just a word to the wise ... while a good test with the Casper's tester is a step in the right direction, it is not the final test. You CAN have a set test positive with the tester and then have a falter at WOT. Roadtesting is the only foolproof barometer.

And on Wells ignition modules ... I have a drawer full of them. Most look absolutely new. They don't spark with a Casper's tester so you have to install them on a motor to test. One after another doesn't work properly. I can't find a good one.

I too bought one of these $50 modules. The one I received has been sandblasted to remove the original black paint (and dirt) because it's used. I bought it for a spare so I hope it works when it comes time to install it.

Well, it sounds like they may be from any manufacturer. No way to know if they're any good without roadtesting them. My guess is odds aren't good.

Pretty much what the guy from Standard said.. Depending on which one of their companies(GP, Wells, BW, etc or company they manufacture for, like AC Delco) is going to get it, that determines the color of the potting gel and P/N. I'm going to pop mine on and see what happens. Only thing I know for sure is that its a Standard module... Interesting to note, that with Standard, their name is the "premium" brand and their generic brand is Tru-Tech. Very helpful folks

What I meant was, this guy selling these used modules on E-bay is selling whatever he picks up. Chris's is different from yours so that would be an indication that's the case. On the different brands with black potting substance, very few brands check with Casper's tester. Bottom line is, I hope they work out for those of you who've purchased them. When you road test them, make sure you have another unit with you in the event it doesn't work out.
