Help....Just purchases a 87 gn and new to the turbo world ...Whats the best chip for the 87 gn ...what mods do I need to make fore more off line torque? torque converter if so which one and what stall... any input is appreciated.......what do I do? Not looking to make a race car just want alittle more........ok let's try this I want to be happy with this car but to do so what do I do while keeping it stock appearing and the stock block to make this a high 12 sec car with more power gain off the line... need turbo to kick in quicker ?its obvious to me a converter is needed to make this happen or??

All that is good stuff and yes I know the potental of these cars.....but dont want to chase my tail....it has to stay STOCK appearing and basically just want more off the line torque and the best way to achieve this ...not looking for more boost upper rpm power not making a race car
.

If you're not making any torque you might need to do a tune up. You should walk away from just about anything on the street with a stock car. Mine has enough torque to blow the tires off at 50mph. Though I am not stock.;) Boost makes power. If you don't want to turn it up just get it running good 100% stock and enjoy it.

The car runs great and has good power once turbo kicks in and it will break the tires loose then but I'm looking to get that right off the line

These cars have 231 cubic inch motors. If you are expecting big block torque right at the hit of the throttle, you are going to be disappointed...

Have you tried brake torqing the car? Put your left foot on the brake, give it gas until the boost gauge shows about zero psi, then mat it while releasing the brake. That should give you a lot more off the line torque. There's aren't big blocks, so the only time they produce high torque is when the turbo is spooled.

Ok guys I know what these cars are and can be... own and have built hundreds of cars.....I normally run a 3000 stall on my other cars but what works good on the gn

It seems like you are wanting to spend a lot of $$ which is good but for your goals listed above all you need to do is make sure the car is running good.
A "stock" combo (stock turbo, stock intercooler, stock torque converter, stock downpipe, etc) is good for low 12's/high 11's once you learn how to drive it and have good fuel system to support the extra power. All the links above will tell you this which is also what others are trying to indicate to you.

For your goals to run High 12's and any future goals that will run low 12's and possibly into the 11's here's what I would get:
Turbo Tweak Chip
Larger injectors
Better fuel pump
Adustable Fuel Pressure Regulator
Adjustable Boost Control to raise the boost
Scan Tool!!!!
****
Stock Cam
Stock Turbo
Stock Intercooler
Stock Torque Converter
Stock Downpipe

Now, if all you want is to spin the tires for fun you can toss in a 3500rpm torque converter that will really spool that stock turbo like MAD but it will NOT produce any good 1/4 mile times b/c it will be too loose.

The best advice I could give you is to read this board on a computer, so you can see people's signatures. You will get a lot of info on what people are running for combos, including converters.

Just about anybody who is running 11's with a stock engine and small turbo is pulling a good 60-foot time, say 1.7 or better. That's an indication of lots of low-end torque, but of course you'll need to brake-torque to get it. In my case, I ran my best ET's and 60-foot times with a simple, cheap, re-stalled stock converter. It was a so-called "orange stripe", which has about 2800 stall. If I wanted to roast the tires, all it took was a moderate brake-torque to get the turbo spooled, and away the tires went.

Like I said above, you're going to need to get in the habit of brake-torquing if you want that huge, instantaneous torque hit off the line, regardless of converter. Without the turbo spooled, it's just a 231 cid V6.

more boost period.the stock combo with meth injection single m15 mt drag radials and 25-30 psi is a fantastic combo, will require a trans upgrade.

What, if any, mods do you have? Do you have a Scanmaster and real boost gauge? I was able to run 12s with a Hooker cat back, no cat, cai, rear lower control arms, 235/60 drag radials, 36lb injectors, Turbo Tweak 100 oct chip, Sunoco 100 ul. 21lbs boost, the rest stock. Make sure you do the "spring cleaning" and replace all the vac lines.

I have no mods yet...I want to do this in the right order....If this wasnt a turbo car Id throw a 3000 stall and some 373 gears in and be happy..... so where do I start with these cars??? chip, injectors, stall....its obvious I need quicker turbo spool to me this means more stall.....I dont want to hurt the long block so are injectors even a choice??? how much boost can a stock engine hold??? what chip is the best ive seen scanmasers and turbo tweeks are very common whats best??

I would do the fuel system first. Fuel pump. Fuel filter. Fuel pressure regulator. Turbo Tweak Chip matched to 60lb injectors. There's always Alky Injection. Scanmaster at the least. Powerlogger to follow. Also check all vacuum lines and better yet replace them. Once you start turning it up the trans may take a dump. You're settings are prob off. IAC. TPS. Scanmaster will help get those in check.

Don't keep thinking this turbo 6 is like your previous cars! You'll be chasing your tail. You need a Scanmaster to monitor the engine and knock. You need a real boost gauge since the stocker is useless. Stock 3.42 gears are what you want. I wouldn't worry about a turbo until you are in the 12s. Eric will match the chip to your mods ie; octane you are going to run, if you have alky, injector size, etc. It will take several trips down the track to learn how to launch a turbo car.

You really should do some reading and learn about these cars before trying to make it go faster by doing mods to it. If not you will be like some of the other new folks here making threads about why your car broke down, misses, smokes, makes noise, blew a head gasket, etc. Or they spent a lot of money on mods and it is now slower than before.

Here are some links to start with.

Start here, and keep in mind that these cars work best when brake torqued. I can blow the tires away on mine off the line easily, my mods in my sig, but have a look at the recipe link I attached. Get to know someone with a Turbo Buick too, go to a cruise night and make friends, will make your life much easier.

Some of the "recipes" are dated but the general jist of what is done is valid.
