This past weekend I took a ride from San Diego up to Rancho Santa Margarita to visit a friend of mine at Magnaflow and have a new exhaust system fabricated for my hotrod which I bought from Paul Helliker earlier this year. It took a lot longer than we expected to build but the results were worth the effort. It's 4" from the downpipe leading into dual 3" tailpipes over the rear axle. here are a few pics. Check it out. :D

Anyone recognize the guy doing the fab work? I'll give you a hint, he's been on Overhaulin.

Very sexy. Is that stainless?

Neal you should keep it hush hush or be prepared by someone at GN1 to copy it and you will find it for sale on eBay for half of what you paid for it..:p, BTW really nice work i love it, the craftsmanship is awesome, many people wanna hear it so how about making a VIDEO and post it to calm down the masses.. :)

FYI: you need to fix that leaky REAR main seal or Valve covers, just look at all that burned OIL on the crossover pipe. LOL

Neal, what Maganaflow muffler did you go with?

Why did you go from 4in piping, reduced down to 3in? Pros/Cons?

I am getting my exhaust done on Monday and also have a S2 motor with a 4in DP, and am considering doing either these 2 models:

4in/4in (IN/OUT) Oval Race 14153

4in/4in (IN/OUT) Oval Race 14163

Also they come in 2 sizes- 14x20 and 6x12.....is one size more beneficial than the other on a turbo application?

A bit more info on the exhaust, I looked around to see if there was anything I could use / modify to work and it could be done but I would have to take a new catback system and hack it up and then figure out how to connect it to the 4" down pipe. The only dual 3" system available was made in China and I have heartburn buying that stuff based on where it comes from and the people that import / sell it. The car already had a really nice set of Stage II headers and downpipe but came with a 4" single exhaust which was god awful loud. I tried to put another muffler in the original system but it didn't really help. :(

The new exhaust is all stainless and it tig welded, the mufflers are 3" offset IN center OUT, what the actual part" is I'm not sure but I can probably look it up in the Summit catalog if you need me to. Dual 4" isn't really necessary as the cross sectional area of (2) 3" pipes is greater than (1) 4" pipe. Routing 4" pipe over the rear axle would be tough and ultimately just add weight and more than likely more noise too. As you might imagine it wasn't cheap but when my buddy Richard said he had a rare opening in his schedule I jumped at the chance. To give you an idea how much effort went into this I got there at 10am on Sat and left at 2am on Sun morning with only a couple of breaks for lunch and dinner. Thanks again Rich! :D

As far as the suspension goes there was a Wolfcraft swaybar on the car when I bought it but it interfered with the upper control arms and the attaching weld was broken loose on one side so I pulled it off. I'm still weighing options for a replacement swaybar. The coil overs are unnecessary and really affect the ride quality on the street as they have very little travel. I suspect they will be coming off the car sooner rather than later. And for the last question:"Does it leak oil?" Yes, unfortunately it does. :p I haven't gone looking for the source of the leak but I will shortly.

So how does the resonators sound? Do they help with the droning at cruise?

I don't think he had resonators he has flex/expansion joints but I didn't see any resonators - unless I missed it

Aaron is right there aren't resonators but there are flex couplings. This was Richard's idea as he says it helps to isolate dampen the noise in the exhaust system by isolating the muffler / tailpipe portion from the 4" section coming off the downpipe. The drone and noise level is drastically reduced at cruise which my ears appreciate greatly. With the last system I wore earplugs if I was going on a ride on the freeway of more than 5 miles. Now if I re-install some of the sound deadening that had been removed it will be sweet. :)

Also it is worth mentioning that Manaflow has released their dual 2.5" stainless system for the Turbo Buick as well! :)
