325-4L,, I tore down my my old trans that was just sitting in my back porch today to see what I wore out, The reason I pulled this tranny and replaced it with a fresh rebuild from a t type rivi was because the second gear started to not hold under power but would hold under light throttle so and this is what I found on tear down-
- I found the direct clutch's worn to the point that some of the fibers were just metel, This is most common right?
- The direct clutch hub was notch and groved were it makes contact with the input drum, does this always happen and does notches make need for a new hub and drum?
- the band was dark but still had some meat, surprising because 2nd was not holding! can something else cause a 2nd to not hold any real power like roller clutches or something? The servo was fine
- some of the fibers in the direct clutch was leaving notches were they rest on the forward clutch housing, is this a cause of the clutches being worn to metel and would I have to replace the forward clutch housing I assume so?
I'm just doing checking things out so my next rebuild will go smoothly. Thanx again :)

1.) Metal clutch (fiber) plates not so good, only common when left gone tooooo long! probably due to low pressure.

2.) Notches in the drum normal if minimal if excessive made need to replace, but will only cause "clunking" noise going in and out of gears ie; fwd-rev neut-drive. Make sure you have a hardened input drum (sun gear shell) when you go back together though.

3.) Black band a burnt band BAADDD!!! thing and will slip no matter how much meat. Also probably less meat then when new and less meat more clearance more slip. Servo seals leaking can be another cause?

4.) Notches on the fwd hub normal if minimal, if you can run your finger nail over them you fine if nail can catch on them severely then might want to replace.

Thanks Mark:) very good info! Yeah your right the pressure was wimpy and basicly that tranny sucked I'm glad the first thing I did to my new one was put a firmer PR spring in (hope it helps this one)
While I'm in there do you know how I make the 2-3 firmer by changing the clearance or adding another steal plate to tighten the clutch pack up, I'm thinking it would be about like a 200-4R but even that I never done, only rebuilt them thats all. Thanx alot!!!

You want the clutch pack clearance set to .038" by air checking it, to add another clutch disc or to play with clear. you my need to substiute fwd steels for direct which are thinner?  but you didn't hear that from me. :D
