My truck got broke into last night, tore up the center dash face a little, didn't get the stereo, but took the portable XM receiver....I live in a fairly secluded area with a low number of homes in it, and there is only one way out of the 3 homes around me...so you have to be an idiot to come back there in the first place.
Anyway..called the neighbor and the police answer his phone...it was stolen too and the cops already had arrested the guy....pulled him over for a traffic violation and found a seat full of stolen radios and stuff....

Ok, to my question, I want to setup something like those IR beams for garage doors when something breaks the line of sight. Can't do motion sensor due to too many varmints running around as its a wooded area.
I want to set the beam up just above the height of the truck bed in my carport.
When the beam is broke, I want to have a alarm sound in my bedroom only to go off notifiying me that someone is in the carport or whatever other area I chose to install the beams at.
Does not have to be wireless either, the attic is easy access for me.
Has to be a simple system like this used by alarm setups already???

Even a cheap motion sensor can be used directionally by adjusting where it points...

a motion sensor hooked up to an air raid siren right above the door pointed down, with strobe lights all over the place would be a pretty damn nifty alarm system..

the guy would be blind, deaf, and disoriented when you come flying out of the house with the Louisville Slugger swinging..

Look at some of the early 1900's British solutions for poachers Rob. They used a simple 12 guage blank and a string to fire a "shot" to make someone aware of a poacher.;) Really simple to set up and with a 3-5 lb fishing line as a trip wire it will scare the crap out of them and tell you when to fire.:D

Motion detectors have come a long way...PIR's (passive infra red) is the way to go

I don't want the intruder to be alarmed, I want to be the element of surprise and use my judgement if he should be shot or not...don't forget where I'm located. Use the castle doctrine to its fullest. I've found a few systems, but it's unclear what else is required to get them to work, it's like I find the photoelectric sensors, but it doesn't say what type of controller of what else I need to do what I want to do. I wired up the entire security alarm system in my garage form the DSC controller, key pad, and multiple sensors, motion and door/window, but the store I bought all that from is no longer around. I'm wanting this to be standalone to alert for just the carport, and maybe even if someone comes down my dead end street...if someone comes down here they are either completely lost or up to no good..

PM me your number Rob. I'll pass it on to a friend that does wiring for security systems ect. I've done more than a few instals with him and can tell you he's top notch.;) I've known James since high school as well as his mom and brother and would trust him with my life. He's the closest I've got to family so I hope that helps.:)

I just need to purchase a DIY system, I know how it install if I can find a basic kit. I've found a few on-line but its unclear what it includes...they could use a little marketing education of how to sell products apparently :) I've located a few alarm supply houses locally so I guess I'll just make a trip to 1 or 2. The one I used in the past has went out of business.
Was hoping I could find a simple self contained kit of some sort, but it looks like I'll have to buy a complete full alarm setup with a controller box, photoelectric beams, a keypad, and the siren/alert mechanism....which may be better then I can expand it to other areas to setup the trip beam on too rather than just the carport.....I already have an alarm for the house and garage areas.

PIRs have come a long way. You should be able to order one that sets a specific height and range. I don't know what system you're using, but I think most wired systems are two manufacturers. I have used security mart out of Colorado for my home alarm needs. I like hard wired. I'd bet you could probably use the PIR to trip a video system that you could monitor though computer or smart phone.

Ok, I think I found something along the lines I'm looking for..would prefer the beams, but for the price and simplicity, I'll give this a try...don't mind the sensor being wireless, but don't like the battery powered aspect as I have to remember to change batteries.... But it has flexibility to add other sensor which will work well for my area across the street also.
Anyone have experience with driveway alert systems like this?

I would think that there are plenty of small panels that could be used with any n/o or n/c switches. The beam you chose would surely be one or the other, and that just leaves pullin' the wire and programing. An initiating circuit or two and a notification circuit and you are set.

A google search should net you places to get equipment.
