Need advice - Dog woes

I'm going to have to agree with Stack1. You probably shouldn't have the dog if you cannot devote the proper amount of time necessary for the type of breed. I don't think killing is a viable option. There's lots of places and people that would be happy to have a frisky little JR.

I agree that I shouldn't have the dog but did you ever see the movie "My dog skip"? That's why my boys wanted a Jack Russell........killing may not be a viable option but neither is waiting for him to kill a kid. And I think he might be capable of it under the right circumstances. It's a scary thought. No such organizations exists where you can just take a dog and say here, I don't want him anymore. Somone told me that if I give him away knowing he's a biter that I can still be held liable even with the new owner being told he's a biter............too many legal issues to consider for me...and like the one guy said earlier, it's a lawsuit waiting to happen I fear.

Giving the dog to a rescue should alleviate any concerns. They usually take animals deemed as agressive. If the dog is not adoptable, they are usually kept by a staff member.

Did you know the number 1 culprit in the U.S. or biting is the lad/retriever? Not the Pitbull or Rottweiler. Why? Because they are one of the most popular breeds and people forget that they are still dogs (ie: animails) that are proe to biting if they are scared, taunted, etc.

The little dogs too get the reputation mostly, I speculate, because they are more prone to being "unseen" and accidentally stepped on or sat on. You have to remember that all they have is their teeth. They can't smack you and say leave me alone!

My brothers got a Jack Russell and he is extremely intelligent and energetic. I have nothing against the breed, but bite is too many. One way or another bye bye dog.

Hey, I am south of St. Louis in Park Hills, Missouri........I would love to see the dog stay alive, I love the little guy but I also don't want to see an innocent kid go through the ordeal of getting attacked. One of the kids he bit on the back and the kid is terrified to come over to my house now and play with my kids....I just don't want it to happen again. Thanks, Dean

I completely disagree with the one bite and you're out people. If a dog bites, the owner should be put down!! First, you should have control of your dog at all times, if you can't, you shouldn't have one. Second, you should know your dog and the situations that might upset them which could cause a bite. Don't put them in that situation. Therefore your dog shouldn't have a chance to bite. I can't understand these people that complain that their dog tears up their house. The question is, what's your dog doing unsupervised? If they have separation anxiety or other destructive behaviors, they shouldn't have the run of the house. Put them in a crate when you leave. There is typically a reason for why a dog acts a particular way, normally it's the owner and their inability to take an alpha role over their dog. Dogs don't want to act badly, they want to please their owners, that is unless they don't respect their owner.

My Advice:

1.) Take him to the local Pound when you're kids aren't around and let them take him in. Maybe someone else can adopt him, and teach him some manners or train him.

2.) Take him out back and just shoot him. (This is only if you have a large area or farm and the heart to do it. Some people can shoot a dog and not blink an eye. I have neighbors who own a huge lot and they always shoot their animals before cleaning them and eating them. So, to me- this is not a big deal. (please understand that I'm not trying to offend anyone who loves Jack Russells)

3.) 2 Dollar Shot from the Vet

Don't waste your time with a problem dog, or any animal or pet in my opinion. Life's too short! It's an animal and bascially remember that some animals are just mean and nasty, period.

Please do not kill this animal because you have no use for it or because you cannot handle it-It's not fair to the dog who has no voice. Take the time to do the right thing-and not the lazy way out. SOMEONE WILL take this dog off your hands for you and provide him a good home.

Thanks for providing the information you provided. But I completely disagree with this comment. "If a dog bites the owner should be put down". Are you serious? Like the guy before this post said, some dogs are just bad dogs, period! I would think that like some humans are bad, some dogs are bad as well........not going to get into a debate about it as my original post was to get useful information on what options I had. Saying that I should be put down is ridiculous.........this dog has been babied since I bought him as a pup 7 years ago, he has never been abused, never been teased by my kids and yet he is like he is...........you need to rethink some comments before you make them I think.

However, I'm sorry if this may be too blunt, but you have failed at properly training your dog. Plain and simple. No dog should bite unless severely provoked. I agree that some dogs may have too many agressive traits in it's lineage and could be more prone to biting than others. But you have a JR, not an Akita!!! Hopefully this shows others that not all breeds are for everyone and you should do extensive research before running out and buying a dog because your kid watched a movie. Kinda reminds me of the parents that buy chicks or bunnies for their kids at Easter and they end up getting dumped on the side of the road (if they're lucky) several weeks later once they're not "cute" anymore. Please let this guy have another chance with a new home. If it's too much work to find a rescue organization for your dog, PM me your contact info and I'll find someone to pick him up.

And I don't mean to sound harsh, but it does frustrate me to see good animals put down because of poor training. Have you ever watched The Dog Whisperer on National Geographic channel? There's 2 shows on tomorrow at 8pm Eastern. You should check it out.

Any dog can be trained at any age. If you dont have the time or skillz to train the dog yourself then hire a professional. Your dog needs socialization.

He is the way he is because you allow him to be that way. Dogs don't think, they react.

If that means you have to spend money on a dog trainer then that is your responsibility as a pet owner. Some dogs are turn key, others need behavior modifications. I compete with my dog. It didn't happen over night nor will your dogs behaviors change over night.

It sounds like your trying to do the responsible thing by asking for advice. Killing a problem dog is not the responsible thing to do tho. Your dog needs to be exposed to people outside of the yard on neutral ground in a place the dog is not familiar with. Keeping him chained up outside will only add fuel to his fire. He chews because he is frustrated.

You guys making all of these comments about training the dog, it's my fault, blah blah blah...........you can not make these comments I feel because you were not there to witness the attacks made. The dog attacked, unprovoked, and did damage for no reason to one kids face and another kids back. Until you have witnessed it for yourself, keep your negative comments to yourself unless you have a first hand experience in the matter. Some dogs are bad!!!! Don't go blaming me....I could have just took him out and shot him in the head and been done with it. But no, I decided to post on here to get some ideas for what to do, at least give me some credit for that! Why is it I have an untrained Border Collie that is as friendly as all get out and loves kids and hasn't bit one single kid.......
