I just had the heads freshened up on a 4.3L 91 GMC Sierra motor and I have everything back together but it won't start. I think the timing is off but I am not sure because I have never set timing manually before.

I think I have the firing order correct.

distributor
6 5
4 3
2 1
front eng.

the firing order should be 1-6-5-4-3-2

on the cap the plug terminals should be like this: "C" is coil terminal

5 4
6 C 3
1 2

I pulled the distributor out completely when redoing the heads but the truck didn't move...one day we put the trans in N and pushed the truck into the garage but that was the only moving the truck did...that didn't offset the timing did it? i figured i could put the distributor right back in where it was and the timing would still be the same as before...

when i try to start it...it cranks over but doesn't fire...all plugs are new and in...all plug wires are connected...coil is connected...everything electrically is connected...any ideas?

Did you take note where the rotor was pointing when you removed the distributor? If you removed it without checking, you'll have to start from scratch. To do this, pull the # 1 plug out and put your finger over the hole. Have someone bump the engine over untill you feel air push out of the hole, this is the compression stroke. Slowly bump the engine until the timing mark on the crank is at the correct mark on the timing tab (ex. 10 degrees before top dead center). Now drop in the distributor so the rotor is pointing at cylinder # 1. This should get it close enough to start so you can time it correctly with a timing gun. Don't forget to disconnect the timing wire up above the front passengers feet under the dash wile using the gun. I think the wire is cream with a black stripe.

Before you worry about the timing is it geting any spark, any fuel? You may have missed a wiring connector.

i was told that since i don't have the alternator hooked up that the computer isn't getting the proper juice to start the motor...is that true? i am going to put it on today and see what happens...i have that and the power steering to put back on and then i am completely done...

i am getting gas i know that...gas shot out of the carb when it had a slight backfire when starting...

as far as spark i don't know...i honestly think i have the wires mixed up on the cap...the terminals aren't labeled so i had to kinda guess at the position of where the cap is supposed to go...

i will keep trying today and let you know what i come up with
