I have an 87 gn and i have the factory alarm, aftermarket Avitell alarm and separate cutoff switch.

One night I had to get towed home bc the car wouldn't start(no noise).

I thought it was a bad starter but when i changed the starter the gn still would not start.

i jumped the starter and the car turned over.

Any suggestions? Do you think it's the aftermarket alarm? Are there pieces/ relays that go bad in alarms?

Thanks

Frank

Sounds like there is a draw some where. Mine did the same thing when I first install my remote start/alarm. I thought the light was killing it, but I checked all my lines and threw in a new battery and called it good.

well I tried to sart the car in neutral and nothing.

What light are you talking about--the alarm light?

My next step is to change the battery---------even though the car starts -- i have a wire running from the starter to the battery--- so there's definitely a short somewhere.

Thanks and i wll keep u posted

Make sure the small wire on the starter is on S and get rid of the alarm, that is most likely the problem.

no noise?

What do you mean no noise? the engine would not turn over? did the head lights and interior lights work? although it is true, the alarms can cause problems, the more common is the fuseable links attached to the starter. they have a tendancy to go at the worst times. but there are 3or4 attached to the starter post. I removed mine to the battery post for easier access. I hate crawling under the car.

I just did the same thing with the fusable links off starter, pulled em up top and connected them there. The car also has a factory alarm which can prevent starting. I believe to disengage it you push the lock dowm manually, just to make sure its engaged, then close door and unlock it from outside using key, not alarm to disengage the factory one. The security light should blink if its disengaged.

Need help : GN wont start

Well I have the week off so I had a little time to work on the GN.

Problem: Last summer I changed the original radio to the GM Cd radio. When I was putting in the radio something sparked. However, the radio worked and so did the car. Later that night I went for a ride and parked in front of a restaurant. When I came back the car did not turn over. There was no cranking noise.

1 I changed the the starter but it wasn't the problem.

2 I have checked the fuses.

3. i checked the fuseable links.

4. I tried a different battery.

5. I tried starting it in neutral.

I have a wire running from the starter to the positive battery cable so i can move the car.

The car has the factory alarm and an aftermarket Avitall alarm with a mercury switch and a separate cut off switch. I can't find the guy who put in the alarm bc he moved.

Do You think that changing the radio triggered the problem?
I think it's something with the aftermarket alarm or cutoff switch.

I am planning to go to a new alarm guy to have it checked out.
Would u recommed taking out the alarm?

The alarm is a little annoying but I do like the separate cutoof switch.

It's just frustrating that the car has been like this for almost a year.

Please HELP!
Thanks

sounds like the alarm to check look under the dash on the drivers side where most alarm modules are and un plug it the car should start

Car Starts!

:smile i brought my GN today to a good alarm guy that a friend reccomended to me.

he took apart the bottom dash and was able to locate the alarm box.
he then spliced the 2 main alarm wires together and the car started!

i decided to keep the alarm bc it still opens the doors, trunk and it has a mercury switch.

the guy put in a new cut off switch with a relay.

The alarm guy figured out that something in the alarm box was messed up and resending power not allowing the car to start.

It took about 1.5 hours and $200 but my car starts and i have a new cutoff switch.

I just need to get an inspection.

I want to sincerely thank everyone who responded to my post.
Your help was great.
