can you guys id this old school turbo please, it looks like a ta 49 to me except for the stamping on the compressor housing, intake wheel housing hole is 59.5mm so wheel is 58mm i would guess, exhaust housing hole is 51.5 so wheel is maybe 49-50mm check out pics, thanks for your help guys. regards rob

turbo ex housing is ar.82 hole is 51.5mm wheel must be 49-50mm doesnt that make this a ta 49? HELP, LOOK AT ICS ABOVE
 
seems to me that John Craig told me its a cut-down 60-1 and a stock buick turbine wheel. But I'm old and my memory isn't what it used to be....

I had one years ago, made decent power but was a bit of a dog on spoolup with a stock torque converter..

set it next to a stock turbo .63 ex housing, wheel looks the same size and style but its a .82 housing, if that helps any? seems like it would be a good starter turbo like a 49/44?
 
It is not a TA49!!! It has a stock exhaust wheel with a .82 housing. It is old school. Not worth using. The turbine wheel is soaked with oil. Chances are the thrust is wiped out of it and it is dumping oil out of the exhaust. But I am no expert.
 
whats more likely is that its been stored sitting with the compressor wheel facing down and what oil was left in the bearing housing seeped out the exhaust side (common thing to happen) If the bearings don't have excessive play, the turbo is probably fine.

With the .82 housing, the turbo will most likely be lazy from a stop if your converter is stock, once you are rolling you are a downshift away from decent performance. If you are running the 10" 3000 RPM converter, then the turbo would probably perform fine. Since its 'in hand', you have nothing to lose by trying it.

If its not all siezed up, putting a stock exhaust housing on that turbo would make a more response unit. A TA49 is a more balanced combo though, due to the better turbine wheel.

so what do we call this model of turbo? is there a name for it?, i would like to know. this is off a decent running car and no smoke, a little side play but no back and forth at all, anyone?
 
I remember a couple things it used to be called:

"Stage-2" TBO348-5 stuff like that.

I had one of these on Super Junk a while ago.
It was better than stock for sure, but I had a 9inch 16930 on the car.
If you have a stock converter, this is not optimal for you.
