I need some help pulling the motor out of my car. I need to send a few parts off of it back to my engine builder in NC. I have never did it by myself:oops: always had my dad to help me out and point out the things I would miss. :D I know that people time is not free so I willing to pay for the help, but by no means am I rich. If someone is will to help me out please let me know thank you for your time.

Dee

Dee is a great guy, so if anyone can help out it would be super.

D, you can do it by yourself...just take your time, go over everything before you lift it out, and while lifting to make sure you didnt miss anything.
Hell , you should be able to lift it with one arm......:D
Dont be afraid of it bro

Bryan

Lol thanks, I just found a 1 ton engine hoist for 80 bucks. So I'll be working at it sooner than later little by little. Until I'll get it done if I get no help.

All by my lonesome.
Like therapy.
Admittedly - with the header and core support off - which makes clearance easier.
If the 1 ton hoist start to pick up the front end - you know you forgot to unbolt something! :D

I do them all the time by myself. I actually prefer it that way.

Sounds like ya made the trip ok!?
The hardest part for me was connecting/ disconnecting the grounds on the back of the passenger head. I think some guys connect/ disconnect with the motor floating.

I think taking the entire motor + trans is the preferred method don't you Rick?
Easier too - by my thinking.
To me - you kill two birds with a single stone, and don't have to fiddle with lining up trans points n such.

It's the only way! Save so much time and b.s..;)

The plenum strap is key! HR parts has them.

A cherry picker with plenty of reach help allot too. The little v6 sits way back in there.

It does indeed.

I need to go check out that strap.
I use a couple of custom length chains with rubber hose around and a lifting bar - but always fighting it a little.
The strap looks good.
I'll have to google.

I've found the LC2 3.8 isn't a whole heck of a lot tougher than yanking my old SBCs.
Sure - there are few extra connections (turbo related) - but all in all - it's a pretty clean set up.
Once you get your turbo, and IC related stuff off first - there is considerable working room.
Much less challenging that some late model stuff.

(PS - Large piece of 1/2 or 3/4 plywood in front of the A/C condenser - or radiator - but I pull the radiator and flush it - so in front of the A/C for protection)
It nestles nicely in the core support once the radiator is removed.

And no style points are deducted if you feel you want to remove or install a few things later - like the coil pack, IC fan - even DP - etc to give you more breathing room.

I had gotten some plastic sandwich bags to keep related bolts in. Like all the header bolts in one bag, all the oil pan bolts in another, and so on....
I would write a little ID note and staple the bag closed. also used masking tape to label the wiring harness if it wasn't obvious.
Andrew

You Guy are great thank for all of the in put. I found a engine hoist for 80 buck and have to go get it. So I will start unhooking stuff on Thursday and hope to have it out on the stand by Sat @ noon. Will pick up the bags, tape and markers in the morning.

Do most of you remove the doghouse and use a lift plate to remove your motor?

I will be start a build post soon to just to keep you guys that care in the loop of what's going on.

I also need a list of companies that ship engine for the best price.

Take lots of pics as your disassembling stuff so when putting it back together later cuts down on "how did this go?";)

I've got a couple partial stripped plenum bolt holes so I pulled the exhaust manifolds and used a chain, washers and longer bolts strapped to the heads cross corner fashion. I think you might be able to use the intake manifold bolts also but I haven't tried that yet on a TR. Next time I will try cause ya can assemble the exhaust manifolds on the stand. Looks like the exhaust cross pipe is best removed during motor removal/install.
I pulled the motor only. Made removal easier. But connecting the trans was a bitch like previously mentioned. Needed a 3 ft socket extension to make trans mount bolts easier.
The AC and PS was left connected to the pumps and pumps strapped to the fenders
BTW, Why ya pulling the motor? Did ya drive it cross country and start hearing weird things?
Andrew

Andrew,

I have a new stroker being built, that's been in the making for some time. The builder is ready for the other few part off the motor in the car. To complete my build. I have to send the parts back to NC to the builder. An I have a few things I need to address on the old motor that I will have freshen up and keep it as a spare always. Never know may find a GN body on a deal to put it in.
