Quick question for everyone here, you all seem to know what your talking about, will burning coolant hurt your eyes. I have a few of the symptoms listed above, but no leaks anywere. When i start up, something is in the exaust that burns my eyes?? Can't figure out what it is, or if this is common. I am running a dump right now, so no cat or anything.

Whoever told you to elongate the holes needs to have their head examined. That is a hacker move. Pull the intake and check for a coolant leak at the corners. Your head to intake port alignment must be horrible anyway so now is the time to fix it. You can play with gaskets to get it lined up. Ive used 2 gaskets on intakes that have been milled to much for the deck height and had no probs with water in the oil and i used the old SCE gaskets with a double receiver groove. One in the block with the wire and one in the head where the gasket was displaced by the wire. It used only a little water. Maybe a quart a month and i pounded the hell out of it almost everyday.

I pulled the intake off and when i pulled the plenum off it was totally wet like someone had took a hose and shot it in my TB  . the entire inside of the plenum and intake was all wet were water had obviously gotten in the intake and when i pulled the intake off the entire bottom of the intake between the intake and valley pan the bottom of the intake was coated with the oil/water mixture  as was the front and rear wall of my block and in the valley area of the lifters. before i pulled it apart i drained the oil put new oil in it and ran it a few minutes then drained that and changed the filter and put more new oil in it and ran it and it seemed to be fine, no noises etc  . Im hoping with all the water up top that it was infact a misaligned intake/not sealing properly intake  . What do ya'll think? thanks mike.

Mike,

Did you have the intake machined, or ?

Sounds like you may have fixed the problem....keep us informted.

HOW

wet head

here's what I think. With cool engine remove rad.cap and run .Usually if your head gasket is bad you will get big burps of air even with no boost. If ok shut off and pressurize rad with hand pump tester(stant cap and rad. tester from auto parts).See what it does, hold 15 psi or loose it ?IMO it sounds like it is the intake alignment prob. The fact you were'nt getting hyd. lock usually means it gets by at manny any goes in the basement not the top end. Also could explain loosing boost same way ,past gasket into crankcase.good luck but I wouldn't jump to cracked head or bad gasket to quick.

not yet i just pulled it off and with my findings wanted to see if yall agreed that it most likely was a improper seal on the intake that caused my failure.
I will have the intake machined in the next couple of days and then replace it with the thicker felpro gasket and sealer. Hope that solves that issue as i need to get it going as my friend has a 2002 Z06 that I want to spank! LOL. He thinks theres no way a 6cyl will beat him in a 1/4 mile run. WELL SEE ;)

thanks blk86, I can't wait to get my 86 going again as I miss driving it and feeling the power. I have three big block gs skylarks and this car is way quicker and more fun than those and gets alot better gas mileage :D once i get the intake milled and put back together hopefully all will be good.

Next time around toque cycle check with ARP, no need to retorque and you will have good luck with stock head gasket, or cometics.

Okay i machined the intake and put a felpro gasket in and guess what the POS  is still loosing coolant and when at idle it does have small bubbles swimming around in the radiator but only on top. also as i pulled the oil fill it has the oil/water mixture thing going on but the bottom end oil is fine  I am at my witts with this, I did talk with another gn guy who said it could be the studs as the black rtv might be allowing water to go up the threads or worst case scenerio a crack in the block around the studs that go in the middle of the cylinder head. I think i am going to take it to Sod a local gn mech and spend the $$$ and have him recheck everything and redo my work, then atleast i can bitch at him instead of myself  . also what exactly do the gm tabs do? they were mentioned earlier.

It sounds like the headgaskets are leaking.Read the link posted in post#10 in this thread about SCE headgaskets.Somebody else had the same problem with them.

Do you think i might get lucky if i go back loosen up each stud one by one and retorque that i might fix this problem? thanks.

The tabs advice mentioned earlier are nothing more than radiator stop leak additive. I've had this stuff work like majic. Bars Leak is a brand name to try. It is available from any auto supply store.

after reading this and talking with a couple of other individuals im going to pull each stud out one by one and recoat them with permatex white liquid thread sealer and reinstall and retorque run it a heat cycle or two and then recheck torques and after all that see what happens and possible add some of those gm tabs for insurance. Will let ya'll know what happens in a few days.
