Hello everyone! I'm new to this board and g-body's in general. I just got a 1986 regal limited ( i want a t-type but too much money for me right now). I have a question about the landau top that comes on the cars. How easy is it to remove it and are there any tips or anything that would help me in this process. The reason I'm removing it is mainly because I'm not fond of them and its pretty beat up and leaking at the top of the window. I have alot of plans for this car, but I would like to take care of the problems such as this first. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

actually its easy to remove, but there is probably rust under there. mine is a ca. car and there ist some pretty bad pitting under it.

there are alot of welded on little tabs that the trim hooks onto which will require grinding off- probably about 2 dozen of them, you ll probably need different trim also. alot of elbow work.

I did it on my monte carlo I am turning to ss. Don't know how I am going to attach the trim. Anyone have any ideas? If you have rust might be better to leave it on, exspeshaly if you said the window is leaking

It can run into some money if you find rust. Assuming you are rust free all you need to do is remove the vinyl and moldings. You'll need to replace the quarter windows as the solid roofs use a different rubber molding. You'll also need to replace the lower panel between the rear window and the trunk lid. And you'll have to pull the rear window to remove the vinyl as it is tucked in tight back there. Before you put the back window in you'll need to install some rivets so you can clip the bright reveal molding around the window. Than you'll need to fill the holes and paint it. Figure on replacing the roof skin if you see any signs of rust. And you will find rust. Especially in the area where the roof skin meets the sail panel.

Thanks for the help guys! sounds like this is gonna be alot of work but I want to take care of the rust (assuming there is any) and the window that is leaking. besides I'm not a huge fan of landau tops but the car was too good a deal to pass up and wait for one without a landau top.

Turbofish38 -> When you say I have to replace the panel between the rear window and the trunk lid, do you mean I have to find a replacement or take it off and put it back on? If replacement is the only option where do I find one? I have never seen a place that carries them.

Also I am looking to replace the trim on my car and would appreciate it if anyone knew where to find some. thanks again.

best bet is junkyards, no one reproduces them yet. Try Brian at Gbodyparts.com, he has alot of parts cars for used parts.

20+ rear trunk filler panels here.
Rear window trim as well.
As far as the rust I have about 8 vinyl top cars here. Most are not painted under the top but every once in a while you get lucky.
