Just got my 87 GN back on the road. It has Chris's shift improver kit (works nice) and was coming back home on the breezer was in OD when the speedo starts going crazy then starts reading half of current speed. About then, OD started surging real bad, shifted to drive and seemed to be alright for about a mile then it started surging. Pulled over to the shoulder, then all I had was 1st gear and reverse, so I called the tow company to haul it home. Fluid didn't smell burnt and was at the right level. If the govenor spring popped out, would this cause something like this?

Ideas anyone?

Thanks
Steve

I think the governor was damaged by the speedo driven gear falling off the shaft its supposed to be on and falling into the governor damaging it. Pull the speedo driven gear out if its still there. Most likely it will be mangled and in the governor. Pull the pan an pull the governor out. PM me if you need a governor and driven gear

Will do Bison. Thanks for the reply. I need to change the breakin oil in the engine anyhow, so this will give me good excuse.

Thanks

The speedo gear looks ok, see attached pic, but the governer gear that engages the output shaft looks like the plastic has been stripped away. Would their be a reason for that, or was I just stupid and didn't fully engage the governor gear properly when I put chris's kit in? I wonder if this would also explain the quick shifting from 1st to second and second to third under WOT?

Anyhow, looks like I need a Governor gear, I'll PM you.

What you have experianced is what we call , "Apple Coring".
It is "usually" caused by: Rust or another form of roughness on the shaft where the gear is cut.Plastic is not as strong or durable as iron or steel. This would Definitley cause your issue. I seriously doubt installtion was wrong, just a burr or contamination on shaft drive spline. Kind of rare in the 2004r tho. More common in the TH350,s , 400's, and 700r4's.
I have seen heat melt one , "Once".
