No kickdown...

I just finished a engine/transmission swap in a '84 Cutlass... 350Olds/200-4R combo...

The engine is overcammed and needs more rear gear... I built the tranmission myself... With the engine being weak on the bottom end I need all the help I can get until I find steeper gears and posi...

The firs time I drove the car was Friday evening... I noticed the 1-2 shift was very weak and it had no kickdown... The 2-3 , 3-4 shifts were nice and "crisp"... Adjusting the cable made NO difference... Today I dropped the pan and noticed the throttle bracket was'nt touching the valve,,, I also found the case VB gasket was damamged some,,, but not in an area that could've caused a crossfeed... I also put a slightly stronger spring in the 1-2 accumulator and drilled the RND4D3,,, 2nd gear feed,,, and RND4 orifices... This got the 2nd gear crisp also,,, not harsh not soft... So there I'm happy,,, But I still have no kickdown... The cable and valve are now working... I adjusted it to get the shifts where I wanted them could'nt do that before...

The tag on the tranny says it's an OG if it matters...
I work at a transmission shop so I'm familiar with them but I am not a builder and am trying to do this myself... I've looked throught the manuals today and did'nt see anything in them about kick down... I got the location of the orifices from an ATSG bulletin so I'n fairly sure there right...

As per ATSG...

throttle, tv limit, tv modulator down shift valves binding or stuck or misaligned vb gasket, sep. plate, blocking hole or damaged.

I was very careful with the gaskets this time...
The valves are free,,, but now that I'm thinking of it is'nt there another valve behind the throttle valve and spring?!?

The builder at work like to do "wierd" things to tranmissions,,, like blocking the 1-2accumulator with a sheet metal screw,,, that's why I'm trying to do it mostly... Anyway he wants to put a piece on metal in there instead of the spring... Is that right?!?

Yes there is a valve, it goes sleeve, plunger, spring, tv valve, spring.

You can drill & tap the feed hole and plug it w/loc-tited set screw and leave the spring and piston out, or you can shim the piston w ith a sleeve or even with a stack of 3/8" nuts if you want, or just a stiffer spring. But I would suggest doing it right with someone tested shift kit and get the results you want instead of trial and error.

Just so every one knows... I did not put a screw in the accumulator,,, and do'nt want to block it off...

I just want kickdown... I think the transmission is shifting pretty good besides that... He wants to put the metal behind the TV valve...

And yes I do need professional help,,, Wait are you talking about tranmissions?!? ...

I'm pretty sure he was talking about the trannie needing professional help! The metal behind the tv valve is a TransGo trick to help pin the tv back to max, but is not reccommened by the guru's on here and not really needed. If you don't get your kickdown prob solved with this post in a day or so don't give up maybe try and repost with just that ? alone and work up from there. Or try searching past posts for same prob.

I got something you could try. Give me a call at the shop. Be patient because I am running around crazy these days. Ck your tv sleeve and did you get the roll pin in the correct place or not?

Front springs and Posi tommorrow...

I did'nt disassemble any of the valve body,,, check plucked the valves with a scribe... So I did'nt pull the roll pin... I'm assuming that's what you meant...
