the radiator trans cooler cannot be used as a engine oil cooler

why not? i had a aluminum radiator with a built in tranny cooler.. i ran the oil lines to the tranny cooler and had a external trans cooler. ran fine. it was my daily driver.

but ive changed my setup now, and got rid of the oil cooler all together and its fine.

oil coolers are over rated and un-needed. i look at it as one more thing that can cause a leak/problem.

Something to ponder, here. What oil temperature do Nascar teams REGULATE their oil temps to? Have fun searching.:D

The top 2/3 of the cylinder bore is cooled by the water jacket that runs around it. The bottom 1/3 relys on the oil for cooling.

Some run em some don't. If you did extensive driving in high temps I'd say get one.

I would guess at least once a week there is a ? on this board about LOW oil pressure one of the reasons being that the oil has to take many 90 degree turns to get to the bearings. Granted that nascar teams run high oil temps but they also have a dry sump oil system (turn a screw and run any oil pressure you want)--how many street TRs have a dry sump? Do what ever the hell you guys want but I know from experience that the higher the oil temp. goes the lower the pressure goes. Best of luck

i look at it this way. Why not run one? If it helps some or none it doesnt matter

Ya, thats my logic, why not? Its the same thing isnt it? Lines running through a series of little fins with air blowing all around it to cool it off?

I mean, dont people use trans coolers as oil coolers? Here's a description out of Summit Racing... used for both obviously, so whats is the difference in the radiator? Its brand new, its not like im running my oil through an old radiator that once ran coolant through there...

heres why not to use the in rad trans cooler
try pushing oil through a 5/16 line your motor will suffer oil supply problems at every startup and even worse at speed , will be worse when oil is cold

Does this mean I have to tell my 20 year old 87 that it should be having problems?

So how big are the lines in the trans cooler/ oil coolers that they sell all the time?

i agree i would not try to push the oil threw the trans cooler unless you have verified the ID of those lines inside the cooler

the fitting to get into the rad oil cooler is 5/16 OD

engine oil coolers use 3/8 ID inlets and larger
