no oil in filter

Hey guys, I started pulling my engine today and when i came to drain the oil there was no oil in the filter. I blew my head gaskets,and thought the detonation made me spin a bearing. but today I seen this. how would a blown h/g mess this up?? And how do I prime the oil pump so when I put new bearings in this does not happen again??

No oil? Bone dry?
Maybe your bypass valve is stuck open.
