I started my car today and my valves were tapping up a storm. I had my brother check the rockers to make sure and there is no oil coming from my push rods. I just put my oil pump back on the other day but it looks as maybe it is leaking very little were the oil pump bolts to the cover , maybe the gasket is bad and leaking ,

can i just get the gasket at the store or will i need to get the hole kit:rolleyes: time to pull it again

yes i did , it seemed to have worked but now nothing like it loss suction or something, is there a gasket for the oil pump to cover.

You can get the gaskets separately. They usually come with a few gaskets of varying thickness so you can adjust the clearance. I always use the thinnest. There was a time when I had to use a thicker one to get the car back on the road and it lost nearly 10psi at idle.

DId you prime it 1st?

Pull the Cam sensor and using a drill turn the shaft to see of you have oil pressure. You xcan remove the valve cover as you have done. and also look at the guage.

I agree. Us ethe thinnest gasket you can find.

Check your manual for the torque requirements-do no overtorque.

How long did the car sit? If long then you will probably want to use the drill method mentioned above. You can rent the attachment from your local parts store (i.e. AutoZone).
The last couple of times I had the motor apart and primed it I just hooked up a battery charger (may not be necessary, but just to insure plenty of power) and cranked the engine (WITH THE ECM PWR LEAD UNHOOKED!) for maybe 10 second or so intervals and watched the oil pressure gauge. When you start registering some pressure you should be good to go.
Bare in mind, I think it is normal to have a little tapping upon starting it up, but should go away relitively quickly.

it was only off for a day when i put a new pan gasket on and chevked the timimg gears out. I did the vasolin thing and it pumped oil , then it was not ran for two days, when i started it on the 3rd day there was no oil at the rockers and they taped bad.i will pull it to night to check it.

thanks guys

Well , nothing.

i pulled the cam sensor and tried to use the drill on the pump and it seemed to get very little at the rockers, so i started it to see if it worked , tap, tap, tap, nope didnt work. So i tryed another filter because it looked to be a lot of vasolin in it. Nothing again, so now i pulled the oil pump and want in my house to cool down. Now what , should i try a new gasket and try it again, or just get the gas and burn it now.

If it lost it's prime (you said it had a leak at the gasket) you need to pack the gears with vasoline again. When it hits pressure it will try and rip the drill out of your hands. There won't be any doubt it's got pressure.

Other things, did you mess with the pressure relief valve or hit the pickup tube?

Yea the drill seemed to have a hard time turning the shaft after i ran it for a min, I just clean some junk off the pick up tube screen that all, i dont think i messed with any thing else really. It seems to try to pump it but wont make it to the rockers, also seems it losses prime every time i get it to start to flow to the rockers. The gasket looked ok when i checked it today so i just dont know,

i guess i wont have any track times this weekend:(

Burning it won't help. You have to deal with the carcass. Why not just replace the pump? It's not a lot of $$$$ and you'll be sure to eliminate the pump as the culprit. You also may not get a lot of oil in the rockers depending on how fast you turn the drill. Did the light go out in the car?. I would not start it any more though. If you don't have pressure, your bearing won't be too happy.

The vaseline will remain thick, remember your engine is cold.

Anything is better than blowing up your engine.

well i packed my oil pump again [ that sounds a little gay]. I also put a new gasket on , i think my main prob was that my cam sensor was not all the way down and must have been setting on the top of the rod. It pumped oil to the rockers but then it ran out of gas so i will check agin when i get some gas.

thanks for the help guys :)

At least you didn't say you "needed a little work on your rear end" ... i always laugh at that one..

i put a new hi flow pump in mine and the drill just about came out of my hands when it started to pump if it doesn't pump that hard than it probably is the pump... you can get em off ebay pretty cheap .. new ..
