The knock sensor not being plugged in would not cause you to lose power. All the knock sensor does is feed a signal if it detects detonation. Without the signal the engine just keeps running thinking there's no knock not a good thing but it won't decrease power at all.

I don't want $100 gaskets but is there any reasonable recommendations for a head gasket?
...your in for a ride with the Buick animal:) why are the springs being changed? maybe I missed something.

Oh ... I was hoping without the knock sensor hooked up the timing would be screwed up.

Figured if I'm going to have the valve covers off I'd replace the tired weak original springs with better ones.

Slide a hose over the valve guide and suck the valve back up into position.
Came close to getting it back up the guide but didn't wan't to damage anything. Spent a couple hours trying to get it back up unsuccessfully. Finally decided to just pull the heads off. This gave me a chance to clean some stuff up anyway.
 
No, the knock sensor doesn't mess with the timing tables. It just reports knock and retards the ignition. If the lines of communications are down, the default is business as usual. There's no 'limp home' type failsafe for that circuit.

since the heads are off, might as well open up the bowls. You'll be shocked when you see the ring of metal GM left just under the valves.
 
This is the infamous 3 and 5 header crack?

Yep. Every car has it. Most just cover it up with melted metal and don't talk abou tit.
 
When you weld yours, bolt or clamp the flange to something flat so it can cool with minimal warping. it also helps to make a little triangular gusset for that 'V'. That will help take away the concentrated area of stress where the crack likes to start.
 
Haven't been able to work on the car much because work has been busy. I have a gusset made up and we'll weld that in after repairing the header crack.

Finally got the turbo off and the passenger side head. There was no three hole turbo gasket. Maybe this was leaking causing loss of boost?

There is no gasket from the factory I believe. Or is that just the headers themselves?
 
That is correct, no gasket from the factory. None on the headders either.

I would use stock head gaskets and new fasteners and I wouldn't do any other modification to increase cylinder pressure or air flow through the engine. Keep the stock chip in and the boost at 14-15psi and run 93 octane.

Hmmm...So what is the three hole turbo gasket I aee on ebay?


It's a device that allows you to spend money, warp your header flange, have a leak, learn the gasket is the problem, pull the header and turbo, flatten the flange, and then wish you'd never bought a a gasket.
 
Sometimes alittle high temp rtv is all that is needed for metal on metal contact, just depends on what and where it is needed vs where it isnt needed.

It sticks to you after trying over and over to fix a warped header flange in the car... just to have to pull the whole thing out and fix it. :D
 
Got the car running tonight, tomorrow will install the alternator, a/c compressor, intercooler, coolant hoses, etc. Should take it for a ride tomorrow.

Quick question on the vacuum hoses. There is two vacuum hoses that come out underneat the a/c box. One goes to the heater valve, where does the other one go?

One should go to the MAP sensor over by the coolant overflow bottle. MAP sensor is only used to send a signal to the factory LED boost gauge.
