I need some advice. I'm new to the Grand National and t-type scene. I recently purchased an 87 T-type and I am starting to get a sound from my turbo. I have good power and no noise when it winds up, but it when it winds down it makes a noise like it's hitting something.
Any feedback and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunatley, I am familiar with such an event.

If you read my post on the Kill/Fish stories section, you will see that my turbo just died. In my case, I was starting to get a screaching type of noise after letting off, and of course what it was was the fins of teh turbo wheel tipping aginst the housing.

I know nothing about your setup, so if you have a larger aftermarket turbo, and some big plumbing, what you may have is just the typical turbo flatulence tht many of us experience. Are you stock?

Regardless, it should be easy to check and see if your turbo is on it's way out. Pull the inlet hose off of the tubo housing and see if you can tell if there has been any contact between the housing and wheel. And then grab the end of the shaft to see if there is much play (there shold be VERY little movement from side to side) . You might also want to pull the up pipe off of the throttle body to see if their is any oil present.

Good luck....

Thanks

Thanks for the help. I am running a stock turbo. Sorry I did not mention that earlier, but I will do as you advised

Noise???

Is this "noise" you speak of, kinda like a flutter, or like metal on metal?

I have seen people new to the scene post about the noise that comes from the turbo when they release the throttle after acceleration. THIS WOULD BE NORMAL.

In my experience, one of the symptoms of a turbo on it's way ot would be a lovely whine. Sort of like a fire truck siren. It raises and lowers in pitch with the spooling.

One thing to do is pull off the ducting that goes from the MAF sensor to the inlet bell. Grab the nut that holds the compressor wheel, and try to lightly wiggle it. If it moves in and out, or up and down you have potential problems. I have 153K on my stock turbo, and it sees lots of foot. It has no play, and is in almost perfect condition. I thank Mobil 1 for that.

Pull your intercooler out and rinse it out with MEK or tolulene. If it comes out black, or really brown you could be seeing oil leak past the seals in the turbo....just another thing to consider.

notacarlo,
Thanks for the feedback. The noise is more like a light metal on metal. The car does smoke when I accalerate, however when I pulled off the hose from the outlet of the turbo into the intercooler there was no oil could this be because it is running a little rich. If it is going bad how long do you think I can drive it like this. The reason I'm asking is because I am low on cash right now and I'm waiting for my tax return. I probably drive it less than 100 miles a week.

Metal on metal sounds like your bearings are shot. Was there much play in the shaft? Also check your throttle body for signs of oil residue.

You can probably drive it for a while...easy! But you run the risk of your turbo shattering the fins, and throwing some metal parts into your engine. Bad news.

So take it easy.

Noise????

Did you take the intercooler off yet? You wont really know how much oil is getting by until you clean that thing out. The smoke you speak of upon acceleration is black as I gathered from your first post. I would say that it is running rich. Do you have access to a scan tool.....it's the only way to be sure. How often is the oil changed?

It is normal for there to be a brownish hue to the solvent when you clean the intercooler. If it is Syrup brown or similar in consistancy, then I would say that there is more oil than one would like getting past the seals. That aside, it has nothing to do with black smoke coming from the tailpipes. Do you have an adjustable fuel pressure regulator?

If you want, e-mail me with a list of corrections that you have made to the car, or what you bought it with. That will help narrow things down a little.

If the sound is "metal on metal" I would stop driving it! If the turbine is hitting the housing, then it is probably shooting metal dust into the engine. If you want to keep an engine rebuild out of your future, dont drive your car untill you replace the turbo.
