My wife and I are planning a trip to NYC this April. What are the do's and don't(s)? Don't really have an agenda, was hoping you guys could give me some insight on where to stay and what to do when we're there. I would love to sample NY style food (see how it compares to New Orleans) and of course see all the popular sites. What else should we do?

How long are you planning on staying and how much MONEY do you plan to spend?

I think like 6 days. I'm not looking to spend lots of money, of course.

What a waste of a Vacation.
Why don't you take her somewhere nice instead? J/K

1- If a stranger says HI he or she wants something.
2- Don't tell any one that you are from out of town.
3- Lock your car Don't leave the GPS visible Not even the windshield holder thing.
4- Keep you wallet in your front pockets.
5- Look out for the weirdo’s in the City.
6- Get ready to have you air space violated (its too crowded)

Don’t forget to go check out our local track – Sorry we don’t have one
Don’t forget to check out our football stadium – Sorry we don’t have one
Have Dude
Other then that you will love it here.

Joke:biggrin:

It all depends on what you really want to do. There are plenty of tours to see the city and landmarks. In regards to not telling anybody your from out of town believe me you wont have to. We can pick tourists out with our eyes closed.

Check the statue of liberty: there is a ferry you can take downtown that will bring you to the island. If you just want to take some pictures of it you can catch the SI ferry for free while getting a cool boat ride passing governor's island as well.

Empire state building: located in Midtown and can easily be accessed by walking or train all depending on where you stay.

Rockafella plaza: Located on 5th ave and like 45th st. there you will find plenty of great shopping and nice little resturants and eatery's underneath. Also St. patricks Cathedrial is a few blocks away.

Central park: Located a few blocks away from the above place

Ground zero: Located downtown on west st and vessey st. Can get there by train on multiple lines. R, E, 6. Down here you will see tons of history. This is also very close to City Hall and Wall st.

A little history for those who give a poop. City Hall is facing downtown from where it stands on Broadway because at the time it was built there wasn't anything built up town from it.

Brooklyn bridge: This is the only pedestrian bridge in the city and is accessed right next to city hall. All of this is a 10 min walk from Ground Zero.

Ton of more crap but that is the normal tourist thing. Please excuse spelling as I didn't proof.

Late Apriil is usually nice in NYC. You bringing a car or?

Hundreds of good restaurants, but Manhattan is VERY EXPENSIVE. Broadway shows are great, all the usual site's are interesting, Statue of Liberty is a nice trip, Ground Zero is very emotonal, Empire State Building, Trip around Manhattan tour, Bronx Zoo, if into animals, Museum of Natural History, all sorts of stuff to see.

Good food in Little Italy, and China town (next to each other), A Hot Pastrami double Deli sandwich at the Carnegie Deli on 56th Street is a must. The Palm II has a great steak, 2+ lb. lobsters, and an onion and tomato salad to die for, sawdust on the floor!

Everyone should see it atleast once!

Yeah I was hoping there was a dragstrip, lol.
Carnigie deli is on the list, and the obvious stuff. I can't remember what hotel we're looking at, but it's close to rockefella plaza. I don't know $hit about NYC, so Manhatten, Long Island, Brooklyn, is all greek to me. I see them on maps but don't know the difference. Thanks for the replies, keep 'em coming.

Ill meet up with you,Im not much of a guide but we can hang out.As much as I go there i really just walk around.
Don't forget Rick's Caberet.

Rick's Caberet? Why would I go there when there is one in New Orleans, hint.;)

Please note Long Island is not part of NYC. NYC consists of the 5 boroughs which are Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. of course I'm from Brooklyn and we call Manhattan the "city".

Hey Sal, we hittin the city tonight? = Are we going to Manhattan tonight.

Your best pizza is going to be in Brooklyn plain and simple...

Rockafella center is in midtown. you will by plenty of good things.

We went to Manhattan last August for our 18th anniversary. Not somewhere I wanted to go, but she has done some pretty lame things for me, so I went. Stayed at the Novatel which is right in the middle of Times Square. I’ll have to admit I was wrong about the city. We had a great time a very expensive great time. Never had a car, you don’t need one. I set up the transportation to and from the airport and paid for that in advance. People know you don't belong there, we found almost everyone to be very helpful.

Buy a Metro card ($25 for 7day pass) and get a map, takes about ½ day to master the public transportation system. You can go anywhere. We went from the Bronx Zoo to the Statue of Liberty and all points in-between. Here was our favorites:

1) Broadway – Wicked
2) A Cuban restaurant right around the corner for the Novatel
3) A food stand down on the bay, corner of Wall Street and ?? (It’s right by the pier, ran by two Russian guys, their mom prepares the all the food and they cook it) a cheap good lunch.
4) Ground Zero
5) Central park bike tour
6) People watch!

Least Favorite:

1) A very expensive steak place (Right next door to the Novatel)
2) Anything that has to do with shopping
3) The Subway ride to the Bronx (The customer base changes as you go north out of Manhattan, go during the day)

It’s so alive, it’s incredible. Also, it’s a two shower a day city especially if you ride the subway. It’s expensive, I could have spent a week in the Caribbean for what 5 days cost. Here was the view form the balcony at the hotel.

54rich, that's exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks!

Where's the best pizza in Brooklyn?

Ok Long Island isn't in NYC, cleared that up.

What is a borough?

bring $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Can O coke $2
Burger $10
Dinner for 1 $50
Stripper at SCORES PRICELE$$

:D

Personally if there really is no main reason for going I wouldn't waste my time or money on NYC! It's just like Chicago YUCK!

I would rather go somewhere else where you can enjoy like - Maine, Vegas, florida, My family of 4 went tot Mertle beach SC and stayed there 5 days 4 nights, Resort right on the beach, going out to eat every night, lunch every day, drinks and all EVERYTHING! (The whole trip) cost $900 Total... We ate at the "House of Blues" that was fun. several other steak places..

If you want to see people from Every walk of life, Tall buildings, take in bad air, blow money, NYC is your place!!

Dress like punk rokers with leather jackets and you will fit right in!!!!

54rich, that's exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks!

What is a borough?

The city is chopped up into sections
NYC has 5 main sections
Manhattan
Brooklyn
The Bronx
Queens
Staten Island

Then these sections are divided into a million other sections. I guess like towns or villages in other places.

And it’s a Big NO NO to tie Long Island to the City.
Sorry I couldn’t much help but I hate the dam City specially Manhattan.
I hope you and your family have a great time.

Give me a call, I'm across the River (Hudson River) in Fort Lee. NJ side of the George Washington Bridge.

Go see-
- Yankee Stadium (new and old one)
- Take a Circle Line Cruise around Manhattan
- See the Intrepid
- Have to go to Times Square/42nd Street (although Mayor Guilliani cleaned it up :( )
- Keep out of Washington Heights
- See some street racing at Hunts Point in the Bronx

Where's the best pizza in Brooklyn?

Ok Long Island isn't in NYC, cleared that up.

What is a borough?

The best pizza...hmm... Depends on the Neighborhood your in. There is L&B on 86th st. This is deep in Brooklyn though.
Spumoni Gardens :: Home of the World's Famous Pizza and Spumoni

Then you have Grimaldi’s in DUMBO, Brooklyn. This is right under the brooklyn Bridge...
DUMBO stands for: Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass
Even though its under the brooklyn bridge both bridges are very close to one another.

BTW. that is what we call each section in a Borough.. A Neighborhood. The cool thing is there are no signs stating that your in a new one. You just know by the change of people, houses, types of cars etc...
