last week i had a look at the O2 while i had the up pipe off and it looked burnt. the diode (i guess) looked like it had a hole blown in it so i decided to use my store credit at postons and order the Tomco platinum II sensor. one question, right after it in the catalog there was a O2 removal socket for like 15 dollars. do i need that or what. can i use a deep well socket? or can i find this special tool at Autozone etc. for less.

i always use an open ended wrench.if it had anti sieze on it when it was installed it should spin right out after you crack it loose.mine do anyway:).

so the sensor just screws into the header? I thought thered be a jam nut inside the header

Nope, it just screws right in...Use either an open-ended wrench, if you have one big enough, or possibly even a crescent wrench....If I remember right, with the front pass wheel off, you might be able to reach it from the wheel well, but I could be wrong on that...

If you can get to it after you've driven it, it should be easier to break it loose after it's hot...

Yes, you can reach it from the wheel well with a wrench/crescent wrench.
If you want you can get the socket at Auto Zone. It looks like a normal socket but has a slit down the side to pass the wire/plug through.

P.S. Changing the pass. side plugs really sucks for us, compared to the 86-87 :( , but we have it easy with the O2 sensor compared to them :D .

I always thought it was a really bad idea to spray anything (anti seaze included ) on the o2 sensor since they are sensitive. Just my 2 cents.

To remove the O2 sensor just disconnect the wire from the harness, and then take the connector and put it through the hole in the Box Wrench (no open ends).

I like to position it so that the wrench is under the A/C Compresser, and you can get a 1/4 turn on it then pull the wrench off, and slide it back on. After a few turns you should be able to take the rest out by hand.

The O2 sensor should come with anti seaze on the threads when you remove the protective covering from it....at least all of the ones that I have came that way.

Just don't go crazy on the torque when you put the new one back in....that would be apain!

(The sensor just screws into the header beause there is a little threaded bung welded on)

Just a little

You just need a little of the anti-seize on the threads of the sensor. I think the removing socket is one of the tools on the loan a tool program auto-zone has. Anyway (Imo) box end is the way to go.

thanks for the tips i hope it gets here soon i am anxious to see if the car will do better with a new one in.
