ODB testing

We are finally getting ODB2 testing here in NH. But the good news is it is for the ODB2 cars only. Anything before 1996 gets no testing

Just curious What states use ODB2 testing?

The media here in nh seems to be harping on how great & extensive this is in telling you what is wrong with the whole car. They went as far to say it can tell if your brakes are bad?????? I have never heard that.

What types of stuff can it tell you? or are we being fed a Crock of Shxt

I know Scanmasters for GN's can help with tuning

On Board Diagnostics II

The pcms, vcms, now have to do a much more sophisticated job of self diagnostics. They have to run a full redundancy in the engine controls to make sure the engine is running as clean as possible. Individual cylinder mis detection, and storing histories of problems are two such items. In some systems the ABS, ie wheel sensors are linked to the pcm, so it can report ABS problems.

It will tell you literally almost anything you want to know about your car and the state of tune. Eventually they will be able to monitor you from afar via satellite so that if your check engine light is on....you will be mailed a notice to get it repaired or else.

One of the hold ups with OBDIII is how far they can go. There's a patent for GPS based speeding tickets for OBDIII applications, already.

1984 is just a little late getting here.

The Phoenix and Tucson metro areas have very tough emission testing for all vehicles from 1967 and newer. Early cars get a "sniffer" type test, from 1981 to OBD II it is a IM 160 test.

The later OBD II test is a computer plug-in to the vehicle's OBD port to read any problems. Any state testing is a pain [and pricey] so good luck!

Yea, I was just going to say that. Heck, put a on-board camera on the car too, so they can make sure you are the one driving, and put a hidden breathalyzer on board too while they are at it.

i use one on the supercharged cars.....pretty much tells you everything, monitors 1200 data variables, 10,000 trouble codes..it'll take me awhile to figure is all out

The county I live it has a sniffer / dyno test for cars up to 1995. For 1996 and newer cars, they get checked via the ALDL connector for codes and a also receive a gas cap check.

OBDII is very smart. When OBDII f-body cars came out and people were eliminating the cats, O2 simulators were used to replace the rear O2 sensors. Over time the computer learned that the O2 sim voltage was all the same and the computer started throwing codes. The simulators were refined to actually vary voltage accordingly.
